Biography

Daughters of the American Revolution
Samuel (Gwin) Gwinn Sr. is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A048733.

Samuel was born in 1745-1754 (many different death dates in records). He was the son of Robert Gwin. He passed away in 1839.

The History of Summers County, WV by James H. Miller 1908

"Samuel was the first person of that name to settle in this county [Summers Co], and the evidence seems to show that he, with the Gwinns and Grahams, came together from the same section in Ireland to Calf Pasture River, in Virginia, from thence moving across the Alleghenies on to the Greenbrier, near Lowell, his emigration gradually proceeded West after the danger from the Indian depredations had partially disappeared, and at the termination of the Revolutionary War of 1776. Samuel Gwinn, Sr. was the original ancestor of all the Gwinns in this section of the country. The name seems to have been originally Gyn, and the Gwinn ancestor was evidently Irish. The name has since been spelled Guin, Gwin, sometimes Gwinn, and Mr. Walter M. Gwynn now and has been for a number of years spelling the name Gwynn, and claims to have some authority that that was the original proper spelling of the name; however, the records in this country do not bear it out. The patents or grants of lands from the Commonwealth of Virginia to Samuel Gwinn, the founder of the family in this country, spelled his name Guin, as I have examined his signature to the last deeds executed, when he was ninety odd years old. The first grant of land to Samuel Gwinn was by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the year 1796, and was for a tract of land on Greenbrier River, on which Andrew Gwinn, with his son James, now resides. ...Samuel Gwinn was the father of a number of sons, the oldest of whose name was Samuel, who also settled at Lowell, but afterward removed to Lick Creek, purchasing the old Claypole and other patented lands at Green Sulphur Springs, and surrounding lands."

He married first Elizabeth Speece, then about 1777 in Monroe County, Virginia he married Elizabeth Lockridge Graham. He had nine children by the first marriage and seven by the second. Samuel moved from Lowell to Lick Creek in 1800. He was 94 years old when he died in 1837.[1]

Samuel was born in 1745. He passed away in 1839. A son of Robert Gwin 1725–1785 and Jean Jane Kinkead Gwin 1718–1800. Samuel Sr. married twice. He 1st married Elizabeth Speece. He 2nd married Elizabeth Lockridge Graham Gwinn 1759–1832.

Husband of Elizabeth Lockridge Graham Gwinn .

Siblings: David Gwin

From: The Gwinns of Round Bottom by Leona Gwinn Brown; (From an unpublished manuscript written by Laban Gwinn, son of George Loomis Gwinn and Rosa Spade Gwinn):

A record in an Augusta County Court Order Book shows that by June 20, 1775, Elizabeth was married to Samuel Gwinn. By 1780 they had moved to what is now Monroe County, West Virginia. Their first home was near the present town of Lowell. They lived here until 1799, when they moved to land Samuel had acquired near Green Sulphur Springs, in present-day Summers County.

The dates on the tombstones in the old Gwinn cemetery at Green Sulphur Springs, and on John Gwinn's grave at Meadow Bridge, do not agree with some of the documented facts. The stone on Elizabeth's grave reads "who died January the 25th 1832 in the 73rd year of her age". This would make her only fifteen years of age in 1774 when she married Samuel Gwinn, and all records indicate that by that year she was a widow with three children. Beside the graves of Samuel and Elizabeth is a gravestone reading "Sacred to the memory of Moses Gwinn who died December 28, 1822 in the 62nd year of his age". In his will, Samuel Gwinn refers to Moses as his oldest son, but if he was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth he could not have been born earlier than 1774.

Thank you to Darrel Salisbury for the following information: Elizabeth married Robert Graham, 24 Jun 1763, Augusta Co., VA. Robert's will, dated 19 Aug 1773, was proved 16 Mar 1774. Elizabeth was a widow on 30 Apr 1775, as indicated in an entry in Augusta Co. records related to Robert's estate. Another record entry on 20 Jun 1775, for Andrew Lockridge, says Elizabeth is "now" married to Samuel Guin.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:

Gwinn-211 and Gwin-616 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents and close birth and death dates
posted by Patti Brucher
Thank you! Correct birth and death dates are most likely 1745-1839.

birth also has been listed as 1746, 1750, 1751, 1754. I also have seen death as 1830, 1837. it would be great to find out the real deal. John Gwinn

Gwinn-378 and Gwinn-211 appear to represent the same person because: same name, exact same two spouses, same birth year and location, same death date and location

Gwin-7 and Gwinn-49 appear to represent the same person because: They are a clear duplicate. Newspaper clipping on profile of Gwinn-49 lists his children as Gwinn. If he used Gwin and the children used Gwinn, which do we go with Gwin or Gwinn as LNAB? If we go with Gwinn, then 49 appears to be the lowest number. There is also another duplicate, Gwin-37, as indicated in another comment. As I understand it, if we decide Gwinn is the LNAB, we merge each of them directly into Gwinn-49. If we go the other way and decide Gwin is the correct LNAB, I'm guessing we merge Gwinn-49 and Gwin-37 directly into Gwin-7. Then, we can leave the children as Gwinns, if that's the name they use. Does that make sense?

Gwin-37 and Gwinn-49 appear to represent the same person because: I found Gwin-37 when adding Elizabeth Lockridge as Samuel's second wife. I think Gwinn is the more prevalent spelling.
