John Gyse was the son of William Gyse/Guise[1] and Mary Rotes.[2] He was said to be 34 at his father's death in 1574, pointing to a birth date of about 1540. He was probably born in Gloucestershire, where his father had property.[3][4]
On 27 June 1564 John married Jane Pauncefoot, daughter of Richard Pauncefoot[2] and Dorothy Ashfield. They probably married in Gloucestershire, where both sets of parents had their lands.[3][4] They had nine children, all named in their father's will:[1]
Elinor/Eleanor,[1] who will be one of the two daughters referred to but not named by Douglas Richardson[3][4]
Anne,[1] who will be the second of the two daughters referred to but not named by Douglas Richardson[3][4]
John died on 24 January 1587/8 and was buried at Elmore, Gloucestershire. His Inquisition Post Mortem found him to have held at his death the manors of Elmore and Brockworth, Gloucestershire, and named his oldest son William as his main heir.[1]
His will, dated 1 December 1577, was proved on 12 November 1588.[3][4] In it, among other provisions, he:[1]
requested burial next to his wife at Elmore, Gloucestershire
appointed his oldest son William as sole executor
left the lease of a farm in the Forest of Dean to his second son John
left annuities of £10 to his sons William the younger, Auncell, Charles and Thomas: William, Auncell and Charles were bequeathed the reversion of some properties, and their annuities were to cease when they came into possession of these
named his three daughters, Elinor, Anne and Elizabeth
mentioned his sisters Elizabeth and Cecilia
made small bequests to the children of his uncle John Guise
Research Notes
Familysearch's "England Marriages 1538-1973" gives a marriage date 22 January 1564 for the marriage at Elmore, Gloucestershire of John Gwyes and Jane Pauncefoote[5] and the same marriage date for the marriage of John Gyles, spouse unknown, as Hafield, Gloucestershire.[6] This is not a very reliable source.
