Biography

Sarah Haag was born March 9, 1840 to Jacob Haag and Lydia Unknown. in the city of Lancaster where she lived all of her life. Sarah married James L. Benson about 1860 and they were the parents of three children, two of whom were Naomi Benson, born about 1861, and Mary Benson, born December 1869. Mary is the only child living at the time of the 1900 federal census. Sarah's husband James Benson was a Civil War Veteran, Captain in Co. A of the 79th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry. James filed for an invalid pension on 11 Jul 1872: App. 176.213, Cert. 162.830. Sarah filed for a Widow pension on 30 Nov 1872, App. 206748, Cert. 175635; there was also a Minor date of filing: 8 Oct 1884, App. 320.149, Cert. 217.538.

In the 1900 federal census Sarah is the head of household, widowed, mother of three children, 1 living, residing at 25 Church Street. Her daughter Mary Robinson, 30, married 5 years, mother of 1/1 living is residing in the home with her husband John H. Robinson, 27, and son Robert J. Robinson, age 2. Grandchildren Alice M. Wilson, age 20, and William J. Wilson, age 15, are also residing in the home.

Death came for Sarah on August 10, 1907, 4:30 am, at the age of 67y 5m 1d, after battling cancer of the stomach for three years. Her burial in in Woodward Hill Cemetery, FAG 111133479.

Obituary: Mrs. Sarah Benson died at 4:30 o’clock this morning at her residence, No. 25 Church street, after a long illness from a complication of diseases. She was 67 years old, a native and life-long resident of the city, a Miss Haag before marriage, and the widow of Capt. James Benson, of the 79th regiment, Pennsylvania volunteers, who died 36 years ago. She was a member of Grace Lutheran church. Her funeral will take place on Tuesday afternoon, with interment in Woodward Hill cemetery. (Lancaster Intelligencer, Saturday, August 10, 1907)
