Bernhardt Haag was born in Germany September 7, 1776 according to his headstone. He was a brewer with his brewery located on West King Street, nearly opposite the jail, attached to his home.
His first marriage was to Sarah Van Hust who was born in 1790 and died a tragic death on April 2, 1822. They were the parents of six children including Anna, Maria, John, and Jacob.
After Sarah's death, Bernhardt married Caroline, also born in Germany.
Bernhard is residing in Lancaster city as recorded in Federal Census records for 1830, 1840, and 1850, and Lancaster city directories.
In November of 1843, son John took over the old established brewery of father Bernard Haag, located at West King Street, nearly opposite the jail.
Death came suddenly to Bernard on the 16th of May, 1860 from apoplexy. His remains were interred in the Haag burial lot in Lancaster Cemetery.

Bernhardt died intestate, without a Last Will and Testament. A Letter of Administration was granted to William Whiteside, Esq., Abraham W. Russell, and John R. Russell, all of Lancaster City. Auditors Report was approved to distribute the balance to those legally entitled, as follows: Caroline Haag, widow of Bernhart, $1386.66 2/3; John Haag, son, now deceased, and left five children, indebted to the estate to an amount greater than his share; Jacob Haag, son, living, $924.44 1/3; Henrietta M. Heline, granddaughter of deceased daughter Mariah who was intermarried with Cleiss, $924.44 1/3; Ann Mary Taylor, a granddaughter (wife of John Taylor) the daughter of a deceased daughter of decedent Anna Hutz, $924.44 1/3.
