Joseph Haché dit Gallant was born around 1693 likely in Beaubassin, Acadie, Nouvelle-France since his parents Michel Haché and Anne Cormier had been established there since at least 1686 based on the censuses.[1]
He was listed in the household of his parents in the censuses of 1693 (age 2 months), 1698 (age 5), 1700 (age 7), and 1714 in Beaubassin.[2][3][4][5]
He married Marie Gaudet , daughter of Pierre Gaudet and Cécile Mignot, on July 27, 1721 in Beaubassin.[6][7][8]
After their son Joseph was baptized in Beaubassin in May 1723, they decided to move to Isle Saint-Jean, where his parents were already established since 1720, being the first Acadian family to settle in this new French colony.[10] They were counted in the census at Port-Lajoie with 2 young boys and 1 daughter. Joseph's parents and his brothers Pierre, Michel, Jean-Baptiste and Charles were living nearby. He was a farmer and a navigator.[11] The family appeared again in the census of 1730 with 4 children in the household. [12]
In 1734 there were 2 censuses on Isle Saint-Jean. In the one taken in September there were 7 children in the family home. Joseph owned 8 head of cattle.[13] In the other there were 4 boys and 2 girls. Michel was listed as being age 41, and his wife 31.[14]
Joseph passed away between 22 October 1743 (burial of his son Joseph) and 14 November 1747.[1]
