Biography

Alexander Hacker was born in Monongalia County Virginia in 1781, the seventh child of John Hacker and his wife Margaret Sleeth.[1]

He probably served during the war of 1812 in the 5th Regiment Virginia Militia.[2]

He was named in the 1822 Will of his father John Hacker, to receive a bequest of forty dollars out of the portions to two of his brothers, "to make him equal with them."[3] [4]

He married Elizabeth (Betsy) McNamara 5 September 1804 in Harrison County Virginia.[5] The website FamilySearch[6] lists ten children of Alexander and Betsy, but these births are all apparently undocumented. His nephew William Hacker of Shelbyville states that he recalls three sons: Jonathan (John?), Philip, and Thomas Sleeth.[1] William Hacker states that Betsy Hacker suffered from mental illness and the children were dispersed among relatives, which may account for documentation being lacking.

After 1824, Alexander Hacker had moved from Virginia to Hamilton County Indiana, according to the Census records. His brother Absalom Hacker was also listed there. [7] [8]

It appears that at some time between 1824 and 1834, Betsy Hacker died; in 1834 Alexander Hacker then married Sarah, formerly Kirkendall, widow of Jacob Smith, whom she had married 3 June 1818.[9] A record of this marriage has not yet been found. They may have had a daughter Lucinda Hacker, also apparently undocumented. She may be confused with Hacker-84, who may be a daughter of Absolom Hacker, who is not to be confused with Alexander's brother Absalom Hacker.

Alexander Hacker died 29 May 1837, (no source for this date has yet been found).

His widow Sarah Hacker then married Robert Darrah 8 April 1844.[10]
