James was born in 1828. According to the family history compiled by Ida Mary Hackney, his father John Hackney[1] came to Canada with his wife Jean and young family from Arbroath, Scotland about 1832. He (the father) graduated from a theologicial college but never received a call to serve as a minister to a (Presbyterian) congregation. He took up land near Galt, Ontario (now Cambridge) but it was of poor quality and he earned his living as a school master.
James at age 21 or thereabouts walked from Galt to the Huron Tract, in Huron County, at a time when there were no roads only blazed trails. He took up land in 100 acre parcels for himself and his brother (likely Alexander), on the Thames Road (eventually Usborne Township[2]), which runs from Russeldale to Exeter. There were at least three other unnamed brothers.
It is unknown what relation there is to George Hackney who settled Lot 23 on the Thames Road in 1857 and was living there in 1879 according to the Huron County Historical Atlas (published in 1879 see below). One of the brothers?
