Anthony Haden. [1]

Anthony Haden was born in 1746 in Goochland County, Virginia. He was the son of John Haden and Jean Moseley. On 14 Jul 1765 in Goochland he married Druscilla Rountree. They had six known children. Druscilla died in 1781 and he again married on 1 Sep 1781 to Mary Ann Crenshaw. They had one known child. Mary Ann died in 1786 and he married for a third time on 30 Nov 1787 in Albemarle, VA to Anne Harris. They had three children. Late in life he moved to Christian County, KY. It is here he passed away in 1828.

This family was in Goochland County and then Albemarle County (which became Fluvanna County) and then Campbell County. Late in life Anthony moved to Christian County, KY. Anthony had a total of eleven children by the three wives.

From Virginia Ancestors and Adventurers, Section: Abstracts Of Original Court Records From Various Counties Of Virginia, page 59: "Fluvanna Co., Va. Deed Book 2, page 481 - 1 November 1791 - Thomas Rountree and Lottishea, his wife, of the COUNTY OF RUTHERFORD, STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA, sell to Anthony Haden of COUNTY OF CAMPBELL, STATE OF VIRGINIA, for 30 pds. - a tract of land in the County of Fluvanna, in Virginia, containing 25 acres, more or less, on the north side of the north fork of the James River, which land was conveyed by Colonel John Payne, of Goochland Co., to Thomas Rountree by Deed recorded in Albemarle Co., Virginia, etc. (Both Thomas Rountree and his wife sign by their own signatures and seal.) Witnesses: John Rountree - Sarah Byras - Stripling Byras. Recorded 1 December 1791."

HISTORICAL REGISTOR OF VIRGINIANS IN THE REVOLUTION; John H. Gwathmey: Haden, Anthony, Fluvanna Militia. Rec. as Ensign 4 Sep 1777; took oath as Captain 2 Apr 1779.

Anthony is listed as providing provisions during the American Revolution. "Cart Hire & with two Comp's Fluvanna Militia, acco't., 7. o. o."

Anthony left a will in Christian Co dated 19 Dec 1827. Named daughters Jane Gilbert, Elizabeth Gosley, Rebecca Epperson; sons John, Turner's heirs (Turner now dead), Hendley & Richard (nothing as they have received all he will ever give them), James's sons Richard & James, Joel H., William D., children of Nathan O. under care of daughter-in-law Ann (although Nathan is living). Sons James and Nathan O. to be executors.

Pension Application for Anthony Haden R.4418 [Rejected] Filed years after his death by grown children for their dependant children, and this was the response: 17 Sep 1853 Pension Office Letter to William H. Wells. I have examined the papers transmitted for the service of Anthony Haden under the Act 7 Jun 1832. There is no law under which grandchildren are entitled to a pension but may be payable to a child or children.

There are multiple SAR applications on descendants of Anthony's grandfather of the same name based on the erroneous fact that the grandfather lived to be 103 - he did not, as he was deceased prior to the Revolution. Most of the elder Anthony's sons provided some Patriotic duty and many of his grandsons did serve in the Rev War. Records of this Anthony and those of his grandfather have been confused as being those of the same person - again based on the assumption the grandfather was still living, which was wrong.

There was also an Anthony D. Haden from Hanover/King William County who served in the Revolution and later lived in Pittsylvania County where a John Haden was also present. They had adjoining lands and were close to the same age, but no document states their relationship to each other. Descendants of John Haden of Pittsylvania Co who have had Y-DNA testing do not match descendants of the elder Anthony Haden (1694-abt 1763) closely enough to indicate any relationship on this side of the Atlantic. However, not enough Haden males have been tested for this to be definitive. No male descendants of Anthony D. Haden have been located or tested.

James Carter [or Crenshaw according to a DAR app, but I think it was Carter according to Haden histories] Haden, son of Anthony Haden (1746-1828) and his second wife Mary Ann Crenshaw.

Not sure about the North Carolina thing, unless the slaves were at that time in North Carolina, but Anthony moved around so much, he could have been there at some time or other. They did live in Campbell Co VA and eventually Anthony ended up in Christian Co KY where he died.

James C. was definitely in Campbell Co on 5 Dec 1809 when he signed a marriage bond for Seley Merrill to Tyre Smithson. [and I don't know who she was...] He lived in Christian Co KY in 1830.

Follow up Note: There is nothing to indicate Anthony ever lived in North Carolina. This reference to the slaves does not necessarily say that Anthony Haden himself was then in North Carolina, but that the slaves were in North Carolina and owned by Anthony Haden. Two of Anthony's uncles and their large families were living in North Carolina and may well have had some of Anthony's slaves loaned out to them. Campbell Co VA Petition to the Legislature, dated 8 Dec 1810. James C. Haden asks for an act authorizing him to bring five slaves (Jude, Pharoah, Diley, Cornelius & Robert) owned by his father, Anthony Haden, in North Carolina, into Virginia.

Notes

Note NI217"Anthony and Drusilla's home in Albemarle County was near the home of Anthony's parents, in that part of the county which in 1777 was cut off into Fluvana County, and after the formation of this new county, Anthony Haden's name appears on records in the courthouse at Palmyra, Fluvanna County, Virginia.
Apparently, Anthony took a very active interest in the organization of the new county. On August 7, 1777, the day Fluvanna County was formed, his name was recommended to the Governor as an Ensign in a company of militia for the county, later he was recommended and qualified as Captain. In December of 1777, he was sworn in as Commissioner of Peace and of Oyer. He served as Captain in the American Revolution."

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Anthony by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Anthony:
