He was a scion of colonial New England ancestry with his lineage going back to the patriarch George HADLEY d: 1686.

Orzo Amander HADLEY was born 30 June 1826 at Cherry Creek, Chautauqua County, New York and was the son of Alvah HADLEY b: 06 Feb 1796 in Tunbridge, Vermont and Eunice BATES b: 10 Sep 1803.

In 1844 he graduated from Fredonia Academy and for several years thereafter he was engaged in the insurance business.

In 1849 he married Mary Cordelia KILBOURNE, likewise a native of Chautauqua County, New York and they had two daughters;

- Addie Amelia Hadley married: Louis C. Tettard
- Altia Estella Hadley married: William H. Hallett.

He was a Whig until the 1854 organization of the Republican party which he joined.

In 1855 he became a pioneer farmer in Minnesota, where he also served as auditor of Olmstead County.

In 1865 he moved to Little Rock, Arkansas where he engaged extensively and successfully in the cotton and mercantile business. He also served six years as postmaster of Little Rock.

In 1868 he was elected to the state senate and in 1871 he was elected Governor of Arkansas.

He was a New Mexico pioneer of 1881 and established his residence in Colfax County, where he engaged in the stock business.

In 1888 he purchased a large estate in Mora County, New Mexico and engaged in extensive live-stock and agricultural operations.

He died on 18 Jul 1915 in Mora County, New Mexico.
