Miranda Emaline Hagan Rutherford – Obituary Knoxville Journal – 26 July, 1907 – Knoxville, Iowa

“Miranda Emaline, widow of the late William Rutherford, died at the home of her son E.T. Rutherford, in Knoxville on Wednesday, July 24, 1907 at 8 o’clock a.m., aged 76 years 9 months 21 days. Death resulted after about seven months sickness with paralysis and complications of Bright’s disease and dropsy.

Her maiden name was Miranda E. Hagan. She was born in Salem, Washington County, Indiana October 5, 1830 and came to Iowa with her stepfather, Daniel Sherwood and family in 1842. In the year 1847, at the age of 17 years she was united in marriage with William Rutherford. To that marriage ten children were born, nine of whom are still living, as follows: Julia A. wife of Henry Bickford, Dalls; Aretta, wife J.M. Rowland, Knoxville; D.S, residence south of Colombia; Lizza, wife of Dr. C.F. Elrod of Chariton; W.F. Kirksville, MO; J.T. and P.H. Hannibal, MO, Addie wife of John Bates, Kansas; and E.T. of this city and at whose home deceased had spent her declining years.

Few among the pioneer mothers of Marion county or of the later generation, ever won and held the esteem of her host of relatives and large circle of friends more perfectly than did the late Mrs. Rutherford. In matters fast Christian during a period of more than fifty years of her life, dying as she had lived, hopeful of the grander life in realms of bliss beyond the grave. She raised a family of nine children, all of whom are good men and good women and an honor to the mother whom has gone to her reward.

The funeral will be held today (Friday). The rites will open with a short funeral service at the home at * o’clock this morning. The remains will then be taken to Indiana Chapel where the service will be conducted by Rev. Latham Ingham at 11 o’clock. The interment in Indiana Chapel cemetery.”

Among the residents of Marion county who came here at an early day. and who have contributed a full share toward its growth and development, is the subject of this sketch. He was born in Guilford county, North Carolina, December 9, 1810, and when one year old was taken by his parents to Washington county, Indiana, where he was raised on a farm and received his education in the common schools. In 1847 be emigrated to Iowa and settled in Marion county, on the farm he now occupies, containing 382 1/2 acres. He has held various township offices and he has represented the county in the General Assembly of the State Legislature. Few men have passed through life with less of ostentation or more satisfactory results. He has gained wealth and honor by pursuing a straightforward, true, honest and upright course, and he has been eminently successful in all he has undertaken.

He has been twice married; first, to Miss Annie Smith, in 1836, a native of Indiana. His second marriage occurred May 26, 1839, to Mrs. Julia M. Hazen (sic-Hagan), whose maiden name was Phelps. She was born in New York in 1808, and came with her parents to Indiana in 1860(?). This family consists of five children: Ann E., Francis H., William P., Nancy M. (now Mrs. Van Dyke) and Maranda Rutherford. Lost three. One son, Jesse, enlisted in the late war and was killed at Helena, July 4, 1863. Mrs. Sherwood was previously married to Francis Hazen (sic-Hagan), who died of cholera in 1833. She has by this marriage one daughter living (now Mrs. Maranda Rutherford).

PERLA H. RUTHERFORD - Miranda's son Mr. Rutherford was born in Marion County, Iowa, January 3, 1869. His father was William Rutherford, a farmer of Marion County, and married Miss Miranda Hagan, of the same place, in 1850, and have resided there continuously until eight years ago. Mr. Rutherford is one of a family of nine children: Julia, W. F, John T., Elizabeth, Laura, Addie, Daniel S., Ernest T. and one sister who died in infancy. The mother is still living at the age of 74 years. All are married and settled in their own homes.
