Anthony was born and baptised in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1729.[1]
He joined the Dutch East India Company as a corporal in 1755.[2]
He died in Sri Lanka in 1793. He is buried in the Dutch Burial Ground at Fort Frederick, Trincomalee.[3]

G. van Epen, De Wapenheraut: Maanblad Gewijd aan Geschiedenis, Geslacht-, Wapen-, Oudheidkunde, enz, Vol. 2 (1898): 'Anthony Hageman, ie luitenant te Colombo; 1766 capitein te idem; capitein commandant te Trinconomale ; 1783 naar Nederland; 1785 op de recruten wacht, met stilstand van gage te Colombo; 1787 capitein te Jaffnapatnam ; 1788 buiten emplo.'
Journal of the Ceylon Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society Vols 4--7, p. 270: 'Hageman, Anthony. Born Stockholm 13/1/1729. Sailed 1755 as Corporal. Arrived Batavia 1756. Transferred to Colombo that year. Sergeant 1761, Lieutenant 1762, Captain-Lieutenant 13/6/65, Captain 1766 and transferred to Trincomalee. But like many who leave Ceylon "for good" he returned there, dying 30/7/93 at Trincomalee, where his tombstone describes him as "erstwhile Captain of Militia".'
