Death & Legacy

William passed away on June 23rd 1852 in Garrard County, Kentucky.[9]

"William Haggard Senr, the subject of this notice, was born in Albemarle County Va, on the 7th of August 1753 and died near Lancaster, Ky, on the 23d day of July 1852 - aged ninety -eight years, eleven months and sixteen days. Soon after the close of the revolutionary war, in which the deceased had served three campaigns, he visited the then wilderness of Kentucky, to view "the dark and bloody ground," and afterwards, in 1794 removed permanently with his family to that state. He had living at the time of his decease, six children, thirty-eight grand children, one hundred and forty-nine great-grand children, and a number of great great grand children. During the last twenty years of his life, he enjoyed a pension from the government. To but few men are allotted so many years, and even of that small number, few, comparatively speaking, have to the last been so highly blessed by the possession of their physical and mental faculties. This venerable man, we understand, continued to work in his garden and attend to various matters of business up to a period within three weeks of his death, and appeared to retain the possession of his mental faculties and was entirely conscious of approaching dissolution, until within a few moments of his last breath. Two of his sons, Wm. and David Haggard are highly respected citizens of this county. For the above particulars are indebted to our esteemed friend Wm. I. Anderson Esq, who is a grandson of the deceased."[10]
