Elizabeth Hagler lived in Gold Hill, Rowan County, North Carolina, which was a booming gold mining town in the mid/late 1800s (http://historicgoldhill.com/). Elizabeth married John Simpson 20 June 1854.[1] John fought for the South in The War (Company F, 23 Regiment NC State Troops); Elizabeth applied for a Confederate soldier's widow's pension on 31 May 1910.[2] Apparently John died around 1865, whether as a result of The War or after returning home isn't known (his last child, Georgia Anna, was born 20 January 1865[3]). Reverend Jacob Simpson was Elizabeth's corroborating witness on her pension application; John Simpson had been Jacob Simpson's bondsman when Jacob was married.[4] Were they brothers?
In 1870, Elizabeth lived in Gold Hill with her five children. The oldest, William, worked on a farm while Paul Alexander, 12, worked in the gold mine.[5]
Elizabeth remarried 24 April 1885 to Daniel Beaver. She was in her 50s, he was in his 70s.[6] (The marriage record claims she was 44 [born c 1841], but in 1850 she was listed as being 14 [born c 1836].[7]) Daniel Beaver was the grandfather of Elizabeth's daughter-in-law Margaret Elizabeth (Beaver) Simpson, wife of Paul Alexander Simpson.
