Biography

My dad was in the U.S. Navy, so I grew up around the country, and the world, though mostly along the eastern seaboard. (Norfolk, Charleston). My parents were both from Pensacola, and I've lived here continuously since 1993, so it's definitely home.

I knew I was at least a third generation Floridian, but through my research I discovered that my great-great- grandfather was born in the Florida Territory, and his grandfather had a land grant dating to 1829, which is pretty cool. I also have connections to South Alabama -- primarily in Baldwin County -- and Georgia for several generations as well.

I started this quest for family history on April 6, 2016. Tartan Day was trending on Twitter, and I was at work early, so I thought to myself, "I've got an hour. I'll figure out what my tartan is." Yeah, I'm still trying to get the tree filled in back to Scotland.

My mother is confirmed through direct DNA testing on 23andMe. My father is confirmed through DNA testing with his brother, Sidney Marshall Hahn, on 23andMe.

I'm a member and past officer of the West Florida Genealogical Society in Pensacola, Florida, and a member and past officer of the Baldwin County Genealogical Society in Foley, Alabama. I have developed several programs on family history research and preservation:

  • Preserve Your Family History: Scan, Share Save
  • Getting Started with DNA: Comparing Companies and Connecting Cousins
  • Time Travel for Genealogists
  • FamilySearch 101

I frequently write about my family history research and the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks Challenge in my blog, Rhyme Schemes and Daydreams.

Auriette has participated in 52 out of 52 weeks during the 2020 52 Ancestors Challenge.

Hi Auriette,

No my Reeds were pioneers of the Mississippi and Alabama gulf coast. My paternal GGM was a Reed. My mother’s family were pioneers of Monroe and Conecuh Co. Alabama, but no Reeds in her ancestry so far. However, I know there were Reeds in the area. They pop up all the time when I’m researching my mom’s family. Good luck!

Hello, I've been a little delayed getting things in order on this site as I've been working on my Ancestry tree. I'm at a standstill with Bruce as I don't have an international account with Ancestry. James Bruce I born 1735 was the first to cross over from Scotland, died 1819 in South Carolina. James Bruce II moved to Georgia, died 1831. He had his son Jonathan, with wife Priscilla, while they still lived in South Carolina; he died 1857 in Georgia. My line of Bruce ends with Jonathan's daughter Malissa who married William Hood. They lived in Georgia but the Hood line soon migrated to Pope County Arkansas.
Hello Ms. Hahn, I have run into a brick wall with my Jesse Monroe Price, from New Madrid and Dunklin county area of southeast Missouri. I have not done any of the other DNA tests--only the Ancestry one. I understand your frustration and best wishes.

Hi!

Thanks for that info I’ll have a look for that! Duck is actually a connection/branch that’s quite a new revelation! So I don’t know anything about it as of yet! We’re in Australia by the way!

Thanks for your contributions toward making the profiles reflect accurately.
I just read your note to me about finding Immigration & naturalization records for your uh grandfather (?). How did you start that search? I haven't been able to search for nat. records at all. And the other landing spots for immigration are also sort of invisible. Can you tell me how to proceed? Is there a help list for this kind of thing on WTree??? Please give me a nudge.
Hello. My mom Grace Marie Duck was born in bay Minette. When she was little they moved to pensacola, a place called Beulah where she grew up. She and my father, Coey E Parker from perdido alabama met in pensacola and were married at Beulah Baptist church and moved to Chattanooga Tennessee where I and my siblings were born. I still live here
