Biography

Phoebe was born abt. 1740 to Edward Strickland and |Rebekah Slaterand married (1st) James Hough on 5 Nov 1761 at Granville, Hampden, Massachusetts, British Colonial America. They had the following children:

  1. Mary (Hough) Middaugh b. 1762
  2. Rebecca b. 1764
  3. Hannah (Hough) Collision b. 1766
  4. Eunice b. 1768
  5. James b. 1769 - 1784
  6. Samuel b. 1773 - 1848
  • James Hough died abt.1779 and removed to Ontario, Ca., This makes sense as her 1st husband James was a U.E.L. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Empire_Loyalist She then married (Heinrich) Henry Hawn sometime after 1790. She passed away in October 17,1815 in Ludenbrg, Stormont County, Ontario, Canada and was interred on the Family burying ground, west corner of Lot number 7, third Concession, Osnabruck.

Research Notes

  • This is not the same Phoebe that was married to John West. The two profiles are easily confused due to geographic coincidence. Most references will lead you to Phoebe (Hough) West, b.1742 Hartford, Conn. - d. 1814 New Hampshire, USA - which is incorrect. Also confusing may be that her husband fought for the UE while his brother fought for the revolution.
  • After widow Phoebe Strickland Hough, married (2nd) Heinrich) Henry Hawn, the marriage provided the means to have Phoebe's children: Mary, Rebecca, Hannah, Eunice, and Samuel (Hough's) to be adopted by Henry Hawn. These children were then able to collect from the "Order of Council" Crown benefits under Henry's United Empire Loyalist (UEL) status. Note: Another Hough child of Phoebe's, James Hough Jr 1769 -1784 was already deceased.
  • Note: Henrich "Henry" Hawn's children have not been added as of this date.
