Otto was the son of Louis Hahn and Augusta Zimmerman of Oxford, Canterbury[1] and one of 3 children, one who died young.
Otto was employed by J Fitzgibbon of Rangiora as a Butcher. He was a member of the Rangiora Fire Brigade and a Corporal in the Rangiora Brass Band.
Otto spent 3 years with the Military Reserves and 2 years with the Territorials.
He enlisted at the beginning of WWI with the Canterbury Infantry. Rank - Lance Corporal, Serial No 6/830.
He embarked from Wellington on the Athenic or Tahiti, October 16 1914 bound for Eygpt, where he saw service before going to Gallipoli.
Otto was just 24 when he was Killed in Action at Gallipoli on May 8 as the regiment attacked a Turkish position. He was promoted to Sergeant just 5 days before his death. his parents posted in newspaper: HAHN - In loving memory of Sergeant Otto Hahn, Killed in action at Gallipoli on May 8 1915. Too far away your grave to visit But not too far away to think of thee Inserted by your loving parents.
Sergeant Major J.W. Landridge, writing to the parents of Sergeant Otto Hahn, who enlisted at Rangiora, and was killed in action, said, "On May 8 we were attacking a Turkish position and in the first charge, poor Otto was so hit badly that he died instantly. His courage was splendid and I would like you to take comfort in the thought that he suffered absolutely no pain, and was not disfigured in any way. Otto was a true soldier and there are amny heavy hearts amongst his comrades, for he had the admiration of us all. My own brother was killed with him, and we buried them almost side by side in a spot which will never be disturbed. I am proud of my brother, and ask you to be proud of your son".
