Biography

Joseph was a Friend (Quaker)

Joseph Haight was born perhaps about 1724, probably at Eastchester, New York. He was the son of Moses and Rachel Haight.[1]

He married, November 15, 1746, Ann (or Mary Ann), daughter of Obediah and Ann Marguerit (De Bonrepos) Palmer of Mamaroneck, baptized at New Rochelle, December 27, 1729, who was the mother of his children.

Between 1755 and 1760 he moved to Charlotte Precinct, Dutchess County, New York, where a great many relatives were settling.

After Ann/Mary Ann's death he married, secondly, at Nine Partners, 24d 9m 1767 [24 Sep 1767], Margaret Rogers, widow of Samuel Rogers.[1]

He was a farmer and a Friend. During the American Revolution his son Joseph conducted Tories to the British lines and used his father's farm as a hiding place for these men until it was safe to go on.

Joseph died in Washington (formerly Charlotte) Precinct in August 1814. Will dated 1814, Proved 1816.[2]

  • 1790 - Washington, Dutchess, New York.[8]
  • 1800 - Stanford, Dutchess, New York.[9]
  • 1810 - Stanford, Dutchess, New York.[10]

Research Notes:

  • Quaker Calendar - There has been much confusion over the dates in Quaker records. Friends used numbered months and days rather than what they considered pagan names for them (i.e. "Thursday" coming from "Thor's Day"). Thus, when the secular calendar was changed in 1752, making January the first month instead of March, Friends began calling January "First Month".
  • There are two entries in the 1790 US Census for Joseph Haight in Dutchess County, New York. Both are listed in the sources, but one may be his son, Joseph, born in 1746.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:

Haight-695 and Haight-116 appear to represent the same person because: Suggest these are the same. 695 has no other details than death which is the same date and place. Suggest merge.

Haight-116 and Haight-440 appear to represent the same person because: same person, parents and spouses match, 440 lacked sources but still dates match

The only real source given for this record is the Hoyt-Haight Genealogy. The Joseph Haight in that record cannot be this one, because the parents and spouse are different. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~fesschequy/Hoyt.html

The dates on this profile are obviously inaccurate. The father and child match with Haight-116, and the siblings are mostly the same.

I think he does match with Haight-440 because they have the same parents and spouse. The birth and death dates are often estimates.

Haight-116 and Haight-440 are not ready to be merged because: This looks like the same person because parents are the same, but there's a wide difference in the death information.

Haight-116 and Haight-695 do not represent the same person because: Two marriages in same year in two different counties. Different death dates. Probably not the same person.
