Biography

Matilda was a Friend (Quaker)

Matilda T Haines was born in Ohio in 1840. She was the daughter of Chalkley Haines and Sarah Evans Morgan.

Until Matilda’s father’s death in 1852, the family lived and farmed in Columbiana County, Ohio near Salem. In 1856, Matilda’s mother left her home in Ohio and moved her family to Iowa. She and her children were received at the Friends’ Western Plain Monthly Meeting on December 27, 1856. In 1857, they were received at Le Grand Monthly Meeting and then endowed to the Honey Creek Monthly Meeting in New Providence, Iowa, near where the family lived in Rocksylvania, Iowa.

In 1871, Matilda, along with her mother and siblings, Joseph, Benjamin, Eli, Thomas, and James left Iowa by train for San Francisco where they boarded the steamer AJAX for Portland, Oregon. They settled first near Salem in Marion County. Matilda later lived in Clackamus, Washington, and Yamhill counties.

At age 45, Matilda married Amos Kenworthy, the son of William Kenworthy and Mary Ann Spencer, in Multnomah County, Oregon on 4 March 1886. Amos was the half-brother of Matilda’s sister-in-law, Sarah Kenworthy, wife of Benjamin L. Haines.

Matilda and Amos adopted a daughter, who was:

  • Florence H Kenworthy (1887-1921), m. George W Shaver.

In about 1912, Matilda converted to the Church of the Nazarene, a denomination that emerged from the Methodist church in 1895.

Matilda died on 21 August 1922 in Newberg, Yamhill County, Oregon. She is buried in Crescent Grove Cemetery, Tigard, Oregon.

Obituary

MRS. KENWORTHY DIED HERE LAST MONDAY

Funeral of Pioneer Oregon Lady Was Held on Wednesday Afternoon- Obituary Given

Matilda T. Haines Kenworthy, daughter of Chalkey and Sarah Haines, was born July 16, 1840, at Damascus, Columbiana County, Ohio, and died at Newberg, Oregon August 21st, 1922. She was a birthright Friend and was converted at an early date. About 1855 after the death of her father, the mother and eight children moved to Hardin County, Iowa, where they lived some years near Iowa Falls. Later both the Haines and Kenworthy families moved to Oregon and settled in the Willamette Valley in 1871. Mrs. Kenworthy was sanctified at Canby Camp meeting in 1874 and her fervent prayers and glad "Hallelujahs" have helped many souls. On March 4th, 1886 she was married to Amos Kenworthy, living near Portland for many years. She has been a member of the Nazarene church for ten years and a "shut-in" crippled by a fall and later by rheumatism. Three years ago they moved to Newberg, and she has prayed much for the salvation of this place. Her niece, Miss Anna Haines of Washington, has kindly helped Mr. Kenworthy in caring for the patient sufferer. Her missionary zeal is well known. "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord—and their works do follow them." About a year ago her dear adopted daughter Mrs. Florence Shaver, died. Mrs. Kenworthy leaves to mourn her loss her husband, Amos Kenworthy; her son-in-law, George Shaver, two granddaughters, one brother, nineteen nieces and nephews on her side and eighteen on Mr. Kenworthy's and a host of relatives and friends. The funeral service was held at the Nazarene church on Wednesday afternoon, her former pastor, Rev. C. D. Norris officiating; interment at Crescent Grove Cemetery, near Tigard.
