Biography

Solomon was the child of Godfrey Hains and Ann Budd. Solomon passed away about 1781. [1]

"3. Solomon Hains (2), perhaps a son of Godrey (1), had land on Budd’s Neck in 1739."[2]

Wife and Children

Solomon's will mentions three sons by name and three daughters with no names. His wife Unis "Eunice" Hains made a will in 1798, proved July 4, 1799, mentioning only two daughters: Sara Tallare and Margaret Hammond. The third daughter may be named Mary Hains Purdy.[5]

Will of Solomon Hains

May 10 1780

"Be it remembered that on the 10th day of May in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and eighty, I Solomon Hains of the manor of Cortlands in the County of Westchester and the Provence of New York, being in sound mind and body thanks be given to God therefore calling into mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make this my last will and testament. That to say First and principally of all, I give and bequeath my soul into the hands of God that gave it and as for my body I recommend it to the earth to be buried in a Christian like manner at the discretion of my Executrix and as touching such earthly estate where it has pleased God to bless me with in this life.
I give and dispose in the following manner and that it is to say First I give to my son Daniel Hains' four children the lands and tenements the the widow now lives on after the youngest comes of age. The Widow is to have the use of the place for the bringing up of the children, then it is to be equally divided among the four children and if either of them dies under age then an equal division still.
Now I give to my two sons, Joshua Hains and Solomon Hains, and my three daughters to be equally divided between them, after my widow Unis Hains' decease or remaining her widowhood, then my three daughters' portions to be divided among their children as they come of age and if either of their children should die before they come of age then his or hers part to be divided between the rest.
Item: I order and it is my will that all my money and chattels be divided between my two sons and three daughters children, and if either of my two sons should die and leave no heir, then his part to be equally divided between the rest of my children
Item: I order and it is my will that my wife above mentioned should have the use of all my lands and household goods as long as she shall remain my widow and after that to be equally divided between my two sons' and three daughters' children as above mentioned.
I order and it is my will, I do hereby constitute and appoint my loving wife Unis executor and Peter Talon and Henry Matthews executors, to act in and fulfill these my will and I do hereby anul and revoke all other wills and testaments made by me before this date, ratifying, confirming and allowing this and no other to be my last will and testament in the presence of my underwriter.

Will of Eunice Hains

Dec. 18, 1798

"Know all men by these presents that I Eunice Hains of Cortland Town County of Westchester and state of New York, being in sound in mine (mind?) and perfect in memory do make this my last will and Testament of the disposal of my worldy estate in the following manner and form - to whit:
Item: I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Margaret Hammond the one half of all the rest of my estate. Lastly I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Sarah Tallare all the rest of my estate.
I constitute and appoint my beloved friends Joseph Wheeler and Pere Van Cortland, Jr.my executors to this my last will and Testament to see the same observed and fulfilled. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 18th of 12 month 1798."[7]
