Biography

Josiah was a Friend (Quaker)

Josiah Haines was born in Burlington County, New Jersey. He was the son of Caleb Haines and Sarah Burr.[1][2] Josiah's exact birth date is unknown. His parents married in 1719. FamilySearch and FAG guesstimate his birth date as 1729. His father's Will names Josiah last in a list of his children, which might indicate that he was the youngest child. Since his sister, Mary, is known to be born in 1732, it's possible Josiah's birth year was later than 1732.

Josiah was a farmer in Burlington Township, Burlington County, New Jersey. His father, Caleb, bequeathed the bulk of his land to Josiah, however, the exact acreage is not indicated.[3] In 1778-9, Josiah worked as a tax collector, and from 1780 to 1789, he was a Chosen Freeholder, an elected position similar to a county commissioner. Josiah was also an incorporator of the Library Company of Bridgetown (Mt. Holly).[4]

In 1760, Josiah married Abigail Ridgeway, the daughter of Joseph Ridgeway and Hannah Allen, in Monmouth, New Jersey. Abigail "condemned her marriage contrary to discipline" at the Burlington Monthly Meeting on 9 mo. 7, 1761,[5] which since they were both Quakers, I believe simply meant that they were not married at a Quaker Meeting. However in 1780, Josiah and six of his children requested to "come under Friends' care" at Mt. Holly Monthly Meeting, indicating that, until that point, they had not been practicing members of the Society of Friends. They were received at Mt. Holly MM on February 7, 1781.

The children of Josiah and Abigail were:

  • Caleb Haines (b. 1761), m. Mary Eldridge;
  • Hannah Haines (b. 1762), m. Thomas Bispham;
  • Sarah Haines, m. Benjamin Satterthwaite;
  • Abigail Haines, m. John Earl;
  • Mary Haines (b. 1772), m. Amos Ellis; and
  • Catharine Haines (b. 1777), m. Christian Plants.

According to Richard Haines and His Descendants, Josiah married a second time, after his readmission to the Society of Friends in 1781, to a women named Mary. The profile of Mary Hulme has been attached as Josiah's 2nd wife. However, the only source given for this person and her connection to Josiah is a genealogy of the Palmer family. I have been unable to access this genealogy and cannot confirm the connection. Since Mary Hulme was not from New Jersey and there were many Josiah Haineses, I am skeptical that Mary Hulme was the wife of the Josiah Haines represented by this profile. Nevertheless, I have left Mary Hulme connected for the time being.

Josiah and Mary had one child, of whom nothing more is known:

  • Elizabeth Haines.

Josiah died in Burlington County, New Jersey on December 5, 1789. His will was probated on December 12, 1789. According to the records of the Mt. Holly Monthly Meeting, Josiah was buried at Mount Holly Friends' Cemetery "on the north side of his wife."

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Josiah by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Josiah:
