Research Notes

Confusion about Leonard Weeks' first two wives

In several sources, Mary Haines is shown as Leonard Weeks' first wife and mother of his children.[1][2]. However, the Chapman source also says that in 1682, Leonard Weeks testified that 20 years earlier, he had put his horse in his "father, Redman's pasture". Perhaps, Chapman speculates, Redman was his father in law, or possibly had married Weeks' widowed mother. Torrey's New England Marriages shows two marriages for Leonard: one with Mary Redman (born in 1649) by 1667; the second marriage with Elizabeth Haynes/Haines about 1679 in Portsmouth.[3]

Recent research conducted by a professional genealogist has resulted in the identification of his wives. The source says that Leonard Weeks married first _______ Haines, daughter of Samuel Haines; she died before 1667, childless, apparently. Leonard then married Mary Redman, in about 1667, and with her had eight children. Leonard was a widower by 1694, and between then and 1708 he married Elizabeth _________.[4]

Biography

Mary Haines was born to Deacon Samuel Haines and Ellenor (Neate) Haines.Stearns, Ezra S. Genealogical and Family History of the State of New Hampshire (Lewis Publishing Company, 1908) Page 815Her birth appears to have been approximately 1645, based on the births of her siblings.[1]

In the 1660's, Mary married Leonard Weeks of England. She died, childless by 1667.[4] Death records have not yet been located.

Can you take a look at http://www.weeksbrickhouse.org/WeeksGenealogy.html, it would appear that these children were not the children of Mary Haines, but, the children of a second wife named Mary.

Haines-1774 and Haines-1731 appear to represent the same person because: same husband, same/similar dates
