Biography

Note: Haines is used for the spelling of his last name as that is what is found in almost every documented source. Haynes, Hanes, Hains are added as alternate spellings in other last names.

Tobias was born in Louisiana in 1845. He was the son of Bernard Edward Haynes and Mahala Morgan. Tobias was almost certainly named after Tobias Gibson, a Methodist preacher who brought that religion to the area and is also the namesake of the town of Gibson, Louisiana. [1]

There is a 16 year old Tobias living in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, in 1860 with parents named B Hains and Mahala Hains [sic].[2]

He appears to have married Paulina Landry, 06 Jul 1868, in Louisiana.[3] They were mentioned in the death records of the following children:

  • Lizzie Guillot, b est 1879 , d 20 Mar 1936 in New Iberia, Iberia, Louisiana[4]
  • Agnes Brown, b Louisiana, d 29 Nov 1922[5]
  • Richard Hains, b est 1875, d 05 Mar 1947 in Jeanerette, Iberia, Louisiana,[6]
  • Lauria Haines, b est 1872, d 23 Nov 1935; citing Jeanerette, Iberia, Louisiana[7]

Some time prior to 1880, Tobias allegedly married Margaret Jane Simmons. In 1880, Margaret and Demaris were living with her father, Daniel Simmons, and stepmother, Mary. Margaret was listed as married but Tobias and son Richardson were not with her.

Tobias's daughter, Lizzie, was born in 1878. It is not yet proven if Lizzie's mother was Margaret or if Paulina was her mother, although Paulina is listed as her mother on her death certificate (see above). There appears to have been another daughter, Demaris Elizabeth Haines, who was born about 1879 to wife , Margaret Simmons Haines. Demaris married a Lundsford and died in Texas in 1912. Lizzie married a Guillot and died in Louisiana in 1836.

By 1900, Tobias was "widowed" and living in Patoutville, Iberia, Louisiana, with his son, Richardson, and daughter, Lizzie.[8]

Tobias may have married a third time, since Margaret married Benjamin Wat Smith in 1882, and Tobias was listed as widowed in 1900. He and Margaret must have divorced.

Many of Tobias's siblings moved to this area and are in these records as well. It looks like the family moved from Terrebonne to St. Martin/Iberia parishes.]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Tobias by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Tobias:

I didn't add her profile because I didn't have enough information about her, but there's a marriage record for Lizzie in Southwest Louisiana records that mentions she is the daughter of Tobias and Pauline. It says:

HANES, Lizzie (Tobias & ---- LANDRY) m. 25 Sept 1900 Eugene F. GUILLOT (Lydia Ch: v.2, p.144)

There's also a record of the marriage from the courthouse that was filed on September 14th 1900. :-)

Right now I have info on Lizzie on Demaris Elizabeth's profile. Still have not confirmed if they are separate people, or one and the same. I'll do some more digging later today.
Haines-1846 and Haynes-9168 appear to represent the same person because: clear duplicate - i looked for tobias earlier before making a profile for him, but didn't see it until now! sorry about that
