Biography

Sarah Eliza Haines was born in Ohio in 1838. She was the daughter of Job Haines and Mary Black.

In 1859, Sarah married Obed (Obediah) Ward, the son of George Ward and Patience Jay, in Henry County, Iowa. Obadiah was a carpenter. Sarah and Obed had eight children who were:

  • Job William Ward (1861-1942), m. Celia Julia Breece;
  • Mary Luzana Ward (1863-1936), m. 1st John W Reed, m. 2nd Ralph McPherron;
  • Rosa Belle Ward (1865-1937), m. Alfred L Petty;
  • Jerusha Ann Ward (1866-1943), m. Albert Byron Smith;
  • George Julian Ward (1869-1908);
  • Randow. Ward (1872-1946), m. Arizona Mae Richardson;
  • Christopher Columbus Ward (1875-1950), m. Della Donesia Day; and
  • Aaron Ward (1878-?).

Sarah died in Rawles Township, Mills County, Iowa on 14 March 1909.

Note: This is the second marriage ceremony for Mary and John Reed, 5 years after the first. Probably a sentimental reaffirmation. The wedding took place on the anniversary of Mary’s parents’ wedding, 30 July;

1900 - Census, Sarah E Ward, 62 years old, living in Rawles Township, Mills County, Iowa with daughter, Mary L McPherron (37), son-in-law, Ralph McPherron (44), farmer, step-grandchildren, A R McPherron (17), and Raymond E (16), grandchildren, Elmer McPherron (9), Daniel L McPherron (6), and Hazel J (3), and unknown relative, J B Haines (61).
