Biography

Demaris was born in 1879. She was the daughter of Tobias Haines and Margaret Simmons. Her mother was possibly Tobias's first wife, Paulina Landry. In 1880, however, she is with Margaret at Margaret's father's household and listed as his granddaughter.^[1] Her mother was listed as married, but Demaris' father and brother were not listed with them.

Margaret later married Benjamin Wat Smith, her stepfather, around 1882.

In 1900, a Lizzie was living with her father, Tobas Haines, and brother, Richard, in Patoutville, Iberia, Louisiana. Her father was listed as widowed.^[2] It may be that Lizzie and Demaris were two different daughters.

Demaris married Benjamin Franklin Lundsford on December 12, 1896.

Lizzie married Eugene Guillot on 25 Sept 1900, and died on 20 Mar 1936 in Louisiana. She was the daughter of daughter of Tobias Haines & Pauline Landry^[3] Lizzie was mentioned on a memorial in Saint Peter's Cemetery, New Iberia, Iberia Parish, Louisiana, United States with a death date of 20 March 1936.^[4]

Demaris passed away in 1972 in Texas. Burial was in the Harmony Hill Cemetery in Henderson, Rusk County, Texas, USA .^[5] The year of death looks like it was etched over so it is difficult to say if the year was 1912 or 1972. Her husband died in 1912, so it may have been a mistake that was corrected, especially if the grave markers were made years after their deaths.
