Biography

Chalkley was a Friend (Quaker)

Chalkley Haines was the son of Eli Haines and Ruth (Miller) Haines. He was born in 1803, under the care of the Hopewell Monthly Meeting in Frederick County, Virginia. Because his family later moved to Pennsylvania, some believe Chalkley was born in Pennsylvania, but the family did not relocate until Chalkley was 6 years old, in 1809. The 1850 Census confirms Chalkley’s birth place as Virginia.[1]

By the time he was 20, Chalkley had moved to Ohio where he farmed in Butler Township, Columbiana County. (Quakers began to migrate to Ohio in 1800). In 1823 he married Sarah Evans Morgan, the daughter of Thomas Morgan and Esther (Townsend) Morgan. The couple had 13 children, but only 8 survived to adulthood. Chalkley and his family lived in Columbiana County, Ohio. Chalkley died in 1852, only a month shy of his 49th birthday.

Chalkley was buried in the Friends Burying Grounds in Butler Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. However, all of the remains from the Friends Burying Ground, Lot 17, were removed in 2001 and 2002 and re-interred at the Damascus Cemetery, also in Butler Township, Ohio.
