Discrepancy

No original source records have been located to confirm birth or marriage records. It appears that some erroneous information may have been published, and perhaps republished/reported, making the “actual facts” obscure. There is a great deal of conflicting information surrounding William – Many Source-to-Source discrepancies; co-mingling, Lack of records; conflicting family stories; number of Duncan’s with the same names, etc.. The "oldest source found" for this William was the "transcription of the 1565 Bible"

The Unproven Duncan Story

While entertaining, probably more fiction than fact. The Haldanes were supposed to be from Gleneagles / Stirling; the McMurdo's from Glasgow. Duncan's from Perth, Perthshire (central Scotland). (William, (probable secondary) son in Influential family). Two stories -- some simularity -- both totally unproven.

Fact: The Duncans held land tracts in Virginia before 1725.

The Haldane's

Fact: Susan Haldane was served heiress of her brother, Alexander Haldane, in the lands of Easter Keilor in 1645.

The lands of Wester Keilor came into possession of the Haldanes. On 4th April, 1492, Patrick Haldane gave a charter of the lands of Wester Keilor to his son and apparent heir, Sylvester Haldane. It is dated at Perth. Sylvester Haldane of Keilor was a juror, 29th April, 1514. The Haldanes had retained possession of some part of the lands of Keilor for several generations,

The fact that the Haldanes at one time owned lands in the thanage of Alyth gives colour to the belief that the Haldanes of Keilor may have been an offshoot from the Perthshire family. The Keilor Haldanes were lairds of some importance, and are frequently mentioned in the records, their lands being in the vicinity of Alyth. This family ended with the heiress named Susan about 1645.

The McMurdo Story

Mary Kennett, wife of Richard Haldane and mother of Susan, received her father's portion of a tract of land in Belhaven, Commonwealth of VA,. Susan was given ownership of the Kennett portion of the Virginia land in return for waiving all rights to any of the Haldane land. She passed this land to her son William and went to live with her daughter Mary in a small town on the Clyde which is apparently now incorportated into Helensburgh
