For over ten years, the family would spend time roaming the Kalahari desert in search of its fabled Lost City of the Kalahari. They gave slide shows and talks about their journeys and were world famous for their travels.
Joshua and Wyn sold "everything" before leaving for South Africa, then shipped the car and a few other things to Montreal.[10] They travelled aboard the Thorshall for thirty days to reach their destination.[10] In a letter written later, Joshua revealed that he had been seasick for the entire trip.[10] They camped for ten days at Muizemberg Beach while a plane was organized to take them to Port Elizabeth.[10] They couldn't find available office space, so he purchased a home and split part of it off for his office. The property contained a sunken rose garden in the front, where roses bloomed almost year round.[10]
