Biography

Mary (Browne) Cutler immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Father Abraham Browne (1590 - 1650)

Mother Joan Shelton

Mary Brown was born in England about 1629. She was the daughter of Abraham and Joan Shelton. She came to New England with her father and stepmother in 1631. They settled in Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

On April 10, 1650, in Malden, Middlesex, she married John Lewis of Malden as his second wife. He had six children. As was the custom in those days for men with families who needed another wife, she was much younger than him. She was about 21 and he was about 37. Mary and John had six children of their own, born in Malden. John died in Malden, probably in September of 1657.

Mary soon married John Cutler of Woburn, Middlesex. Mary and her new husband had one daughter, named Mary, born in 1663. John Cutler died in Woburn about 1678.

Mary then married her daughter Mary's father-in-law, Matthew Smith Sr.[citation needed] Matthew lived until after 1694.

Notes on Mary's Ancestors

Abraham, Mary's father, came to Watertown from Hawkedon, Bury St. Edmunds where his father THOMAS BROWNE owned a substantial country estate called "SWAN HALL" about a mile from town. This estate was then several hundred years old, built of oak, covered with plaster and elaborately carved. An elegant stained glass window adorned the grand hall where the coat of arms was displayed. Abraham Browne, was born here and his father,Thomas Browne was buried here Dec. 23,1590.

THOMAS BROWNE's father Christopher Brown III,also of Swan Hall died there on May 31,1574 at Hawkedon. His father Christopher Browne II ,also of Swan Hall, married Anne_____of Suffolk County, made his will and died at Bury St. Edmunds July 3,1538. His parents were Christopher Browne,Esquire of Stamford and Tolethrope County,Rutland, and Agnes of Beduingord County,Norfork. His will, dated 1516 was proved at London in Feb. 1518.

What source shows the death date for her in this profile?

In A Cutler memorial and genealogical history on pg 318-319, it states that on April 3, 1666, the County Court, in consequence of his insanity, placed him under the guardianship of the selectmen of Woburn, and instructed them to dispose of his property "so as to be for his benefit and that of his children, and for paiment of that Ingaigement he made to his late wife the relict of John Lewis." This would indicate to me that Mary Brown had died prior to April 3, 1666. Also, I believe the Mary who married Matthew Smith, Sr was the widow of Thomas Cutler, not John.

Thank you Sarah. It looks like the Mary who married Matthew Smith may have been Mary (Giles) Smith (abt.1635-). There is some uncertainty since both father and son Matthew Smith married a Mary Cutler. More sources in support of which Mary Cutler married the elder Matthew Smith would be great for someone to add to the relevant profiles to help us straighten it out.

This person immigrated to New England between 1621-1640 as a Minor Child (under age 21 at time of immigration) of a Puritan Great Migration immigrant who is profiled in Robert Charles Anderson's Great Migration Directory (or is otherwise accepted by the Puritan Great Migration (PGM) Project).

Posting this which came in via email:

"PGMP Managers:

In the header for Mary Browne her mother is shown as Joan Shelton; however in the bio section her mother is shown as Lydia Hodges.

Maybe a change is needed."

How do we know the name of the mother of Samuel Lewis?

Can we get better sources for her multiple marriages. Find a Grave is insufficient for marriage sourcing. Thanks.

The mother of Samuel Lewis was Margaret Unknown. The daughter of Abraham Brown was Mary Brown. This profile needs to decide who it is and be merged.
