Biography

Birth

Wicks was born in about 1798 to Francis Marion Hale and Elizabeth Burroughs.[1] His family lived in Grayson County, Virginia.

Marriage & Children

He married Margaret "Peggy" Bryant in 1822.[2] They had two children:

  1. Jestianna (b. 1824)
  2. Susan (b. 1827)

Peggy died in 1836. Wicks then married Martha "Patsy" Delp in about 1837.[3] They had the following children:

  1. Caroline (b. 1837)
  2. Fountain (b. 1839)
  3. Elizabeth (b. about 1841)
  4. George Wicks (b. 1845)
  5. Nancy Ann (b. 1848)
  6. Hugh Melvin (b. 1851)
  7. John William (b. 1853)
  8. Joseph Hix (b. 1856)
  9. Rebecca Lutica "Lou" (b. 1859)
  10. James Clark "Jim"
  11. Stephen Marshall

1850 Census

1850: Wicks and Patsy lived in Grayson County, Virginia, with their children Caroline (13), Fountain (11), Elizabeth (9), George (7), and Nancy (2).[4]

1860 Census

1860: Wicks and Patsy lived in Elk Creek, Grayson County, Virginia, with their children Caroline (21), Fountain (20), Elizabeth (18), George W (14), Nancy (12), Hugh M (9), John W (8), Joseph H (4), and Rebecca (11 months).[5]

1870 Census

1870: Wicks and Patsy lived in Elk Creek, Grayson County, Virginia, with their children Caroline (29), Fountain (28), George W (22), Nancy (21), Hugh Melvin (19), John (17), J Hicks (12), Rebecca (9), Stephen (6), James (4), and their grandson, Friel (8).[6]

1880 Census

A "W.H. Hale" is listed in the 1880 census as living with their son, George Wicks Hale, in Elk Creek, Grayson, Virginia.[7] This is most likely Wicks, but W.H. is listed as a widower, and Patsy did not die until 1893. In 1880 Patsy is censused as "married" and living with their sons James and Stephen, and their grandson Franklin, in Black Lick, Wythe County, Virginia.[8] It is possible that they were just living separately and Wicks' status as "widowed" is a mistake.

Death

He passed away sometime after 1880 (and before the 1900 census).[1]
