Biography

John A. Hale was born about 1847 to George and Elizabeth Hale in Jackson County, Tennessee, where he appears on the 1850 census at three years old.[1] At some point during the next decade he moved with his family, and in 1860 they were living in Osage Township, Carroll County, Akansas.[2]

In 1870 John A Haile, 21, was living in Liberty Township, Carrol Co Arkansas with his mother, Elizabeth, 61, and his sister, Sofina and her husband, Thomas Clark. His father was apparently no longer living. [3]

The 1900 census[4] notes that John and Susana had both been married for 28 years; they would have married about 1872.

The 1880 census[5] shows John, 29, and Susanna,24, living in Comanche, Texas, with the following children, all born in Texas:

It’s likely that the name of this last child, Millie, was changed to, or confused with, another:

  • Nancy Lura Hale, born January 16, 1880 in Comanche, Texas to John Anderson Hale and Susanne Brown[6]

Twenty years later, by the time of the 1900 census, John and Susana’s first five children had all left home. The following children were all born in Texas and living with them in Fisher, Texas:[4]

In 1910 [7] only three children were with John and Susanna:

  • John A Hale, Jr., 17
  • Joseph Hale, 16
  • Barnie S Hale, 10

According to FindAGrave, John died November 10, 1913 at the age of 64 and is buried in Jayton, Kent County, Texas. His birthplace and birthdate on FindAGrave disagrees with the 1850 census and appears to be in error.[8]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

The birth information on FindaGrave is in error -- John’s date of birth of January 14, 1849 is possible, but questionable, since his place of birth (Missouri) is almost definitely wrong. There is no other source provided, other than the unsourced FindaGrave entry, for the January 14, 1849 date. The 1850 census of Jackson Co., Tennessee, where John is recorded as being three years old, is the closest contemporary document to the event and suggests that his birth year is 1847. On the other hand, the 1860 census for the same family shows his age as 11, and the 1870 census show him as 21, making his birth year 1849. His childrens’ birth records have him with various birth years – up to 1853. The 1900 census has a date of Jan 18, but no year. His date of birth needs to remain uncertain at this point.

In view of:

1840 Census shows GW and family (with ages that match the kids) for Bledsoe Co., TN w/ 1 female under 5 Lucinda @ 3) 1 male under 5 (Luke @ 1) 1 f between 5 & 10 (Poly @ 6) 2 males between 5 & 10 ( William @ 5 & Thomas @ 9) 1 f between 30 & 40 (Elizabeth @ 31) 1 male between 30 & 40 (GW @33) 1 f between 70 & 80 (Elizabeth or G W’s mother) 1? (possibly erased) 1 male between 70 & 80 (father?) 1850 Census shows GW and family including John A (3 years) in District 17, Jackson County, TN. 1860 Census shows George W (Jr), Mary E., James P., John A., and Martha M. all born in TN. Seems to strongly support the TN birth data.

Following up on my info on Mary Elizabeth Buster, I found marriage recorded in Green county TN for George Hale and Elizabeth Buster on 7/10/1818. That would make George 11 and Elizabeth 9.

I found further records of George marrying Elizabeth Whitson. I have a copy my mother's hand written loose leaf genealogy notebook (one page for each family) that shows George Washington Hale, b 1807, as John Anderson Hale, b Jan 14, 1849, as my G-Grandfather. I found several trees with George W Hale as the father of John A Hale, with some the same siblings (not all had all them, but they had the same birth dates.

According to the Carroll County Arkansas census of 1860 (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M87T-1QZ), the George W Hale who is the father of the children listed on his profile, was born in 1807. The "George Hale" marriage to Elizabeth Buster took place in 1818 (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VNZG-V9M), when our George W. would have been 11 years old. Elizabeth Buster must be rejected as the mother of this John Anderson Hale and wife of our George W. Hale . If there is evidence that Elizabeth Buster had a child named John Anderson Hale this should be shown as a Rejected Match. The merge could take place provided Elizabeth Buster is not shown as the wife of George W. Hale and mother of John.

Hale-6610 and Hale-3350 appear to represent the same person because: Both born in 1849.

Both had a brother born and 13 Aug 1841 but with different death dates. Both had a father named George W(ashington) born in 1807 in Tenn. Both had a mother named Elizabeth born 6 Jun 1809 in Tenn and both died on 4 Mar 1898. But Hale-6610 shows mother to be Mary Elizabeth Hale formerly Buster. While Hale-3350 shows mother to be Elizabeth Hale formerly Whitson. Is it possible that Elizabeth had previously married and that Buster or Whitson is her birth name and the other is her name after previous marriage?
