Lavinia was born on 6 December 1845 in New York. [1] She was the daughter of William Whaley Maxwell and Julia A Chamberlain.[2]
When Lavinia was 23 she married Silas Fowler Hale on 4 July 1869 in Osceola, Polk Co., Wisconsin. Silas parents were Isaac W Hale and Nancy. [2]
Her marriage license (with sister, Mary, who wed Silas' brother, Reuben) was taken out in Polk Co. The newspaper announcement of the marriage indicates the double marriage took place at the home of William Maxwell in Somerset, and the minister as Rev. E. S. Havens. Rev. Havens was a well known circuit rider through the midwest at the time.
In the 1900 census Lavinia was living in Farmington, Polk, Wisconsin, USA. [1]
Lavinia died at the age of 59 on 10 February 1905 in Monroe, Green County, Wisconsin and was buried in Pleasant Prairie Cemetery, Osceola, Polk County, Wisconsin, USA.[3]
After visiting the area in Oct 2018, Betsey Dunn located her obituary in the Polk Press. It provided her place of birth and place of death. Place of death is corroborated in the 1900 Census. She is enumerated in 2 households (with Silas) and at a mental hospital as well. The obituary confirms the latter.
Sources for some of the children have Lavinia's middle name as Manda.
