HALE, Sylvester Graham - WW1 21/14 - Army [1] [2]
Sylvester Gresham Hale joined the Marlborough Mounted Rifles in 1908, and joined the N.Z. Territorial Forces following the institution of that scheme in 1910. In 1911 he moved to Wellington and was transferred to the Fifth Wellington Regiment. He later transferred to the Territorial Reserve.
He was 5' 10" tall and had blue eyes, dark brown hair and a fair complexion.
He joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on the 13th August 1914, the day after the U.K. declared war on Austria-Hungary. From then on, he served continuously in the armed forces until 1921 when he was transferred to the Reserve of Officers with the rank of Captain.
He embarked for Egypt on the Moeraki or Monowai as Sergeant; Army Pay Department with the Samoan Advance Party in the 2nd Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade. His book of photographs taken at Gallipoli in now with the National Army Museum
Awarded MBE - gazetted in the London Gazette 9th December 1919 and presented at Government House, Wellington on the 9th June 1920. citation Has been brought to the notice of the Secretary of State for valuable service at home towards the successful conduct and has been noted for records and published in the press by the War Office. To be M.B.E. for distinguished services in connection with military operations in Egypt and Palestine
