Biography

Sophia was born in December of 1843 to Marlin Haley and Nancy (McCormack) Haley. She married James W. Gilbert in 1865 and they started their family. It seems that, in addition to the three sons that survived to adulthood, James and Sophia had three other daughters who did not survive past the age of five years: Nancy (Nanny), born in about 1867 and mentioned in the 1870 Federal Census; an unnamed daughter born in 1880 and died in 1881; and Bessie, born in 1885 who died in 1886.
