Biography

Martha Mattie was born 1837. She was the daughter of Samuel Haley and Sally Bartlett

Her mother passed away in 1854 and her father remarried.

US Census Date 1860: Living with her father and stepmother Mary in Epping, Rockingham, New Hampshire, United States. Aged 22. Her father was a Farmer. Also in the household was one Patrick Scandlin, Labourer.^[1]

She married Augustus Barclay Burwell on 22 March 1866 at Epping, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.^[2]

They had two children;

Sarah Lillian (b. March 29, 1869 in Chelsea, Massachusetts)

Arthur Augustus (b. November 17, 1870)

United States Census Date 1870: Living with her husband and one year old daughter Sarah in Massachusetts, United States. Aged 31.^[3]

United States Census Date 1880: Martha and her husband were now living in Dover, Strafford, New Hampshire, United States with their two children. She was by now aged 43. Her husband was a self-employed Fruit Dealer.^[4]

Tragically her husband died in 1892 after walking out in front of a train.

Mattie passed away in 1899 at the relatively young age of 61.^[5]
