"Mr. Joseph Hall was born in Oxford County, New York, March 6, 1816, and on his mother's side was related to Thurlow Weed. In 1833 Mr. Hall came West and settled in Ottawa, La Salle County, Illinois, and began business, being a blacksmith by trade, which he continued for some years, and later bought a packet line on the Illinois and Michigan Canal. He subsequently sold out this business, and moved on to a farm six miles from Ottawa, where he lived until his death."
