Biography

This profile is part of the Hall Name Study.

Riley HALL was born about 1829 in Kentucky[1] and died between 1880 and 1910 in Kentucky (A source for this information is needed). He is believed to have been the son of Samuel HALL and Spicey RHEA, but definite proof of parentage is lacking.(A source for this information is needed). He is buried in “Place” (A source for this information is needed).

Riley HALL was married on 27 August 1851 in Pike County, Kentucky to Polly TACKETT.[2]

Clyde Runyon, "Marriage Bonds of Pike County, Kentucky 1822 - 1865," (Self published in Belfre, Kentucky: 1984), p. 197, File No. 1166 - "License issued August 26, 1851 by James Bevins cpcc for marriage of Riley Hall "(Sam's)" and Miss Polly Tackett, daughter of Francis Tackett, consent being legally given by said Tackett. Bond signed by Riley Hall (Sams Son) and by Samuel Hall Sr. (by mark). Letter dated August 26, 1851: "I do here by certify that Polly Tackitt is of age her own woman . . . please let her have license to marry Rily Hall" . . . ; signed by Francis Tackitt and Polly Tackitt (by marks) and witnessed by Reubin Branham, Samuel Hall Sr. and Samuel Hall Jr. Married August 27, 1851 by Robert Austin."
RESEARCHER'S NOTES: while this marriage bond seems to indicate that Riley HALL was the son of Sam HALL the fact that the mention of these is in ( ) could point towards the author's inclusion of his own notes in the record and the actual record needs to be checked, if it is still available, to discover if these are the author's notes or an actual documented relationship.

Polly TACKETT is currently thought to have been born between 1820 and 1835 (Note: Estimate of Birth for Polly TACKETT based upon the 1840 census record of Francis TACKETT in Pike County, Kentucky and the ages of the free white female children listed within that household. Francis TACKETT gave permission for Polly TACKETT to marry in 1851). The 1850 Census record of a Mary TACKETT in the household of Francis TACKETT in Floyd County, Kentucky may point towards her birth being about 1828 in Kentucky. She died before 31 December 1853 probably in Pike County, Kentucky due to the fact that was when her husband, Riley HALL, married his second wife. On that record, Riley HALL was listed as a widower.[3] She was the daughter of Francis TACKETT (Note: Francis TACKETT gave permission for Polly to marry Riley HALL in letter dated 26 August 1851 in the marriage bond file no 1166 in Pike County, Kentucky). Her mother's name is thought to have been Martha.[4] Her place of burial is currently unknown.

In the 1840 United States Federal Census Record of Pike County, Kentucky, Francis TACKETT was enumerated with four free white female children:
Free White Female Aged 5 to 10 Years [Est. Birth: 1830 to 1835]
Free White Female Aged 10 to 15 Years [Est. Birth: 1825 to 1830]
Free White Female Aged 10 to 15 Years [Est. Birth: 1825 to 1830]
Free White Female Aged 15 to 20 Years [Est. Birth: 1820 to 1825]
Further research is needed to identify these children and narrow down the birth date of Polly TACKETT. As it stands if this was her father, Polly Tacket was probably born between 1820 and 1835.
In 1850 United States Federal Census Record of Pike County, Kentucky there is a listing for a Francis TACKETT (Age: 66 years, born in Virginia) and a woman, Martha TACKETT (Age: 53 Years, born in North Carolina) who was probably his wife. In the household there is a child named Mary TACKETT who was 22 years old and born in Kentucky.[5] Polly is a common nickname used for Mary.[6]
Records of the 1860 census record and the ages of the children within suggest that the marriage between Riley HALL and Polly TACKETT produced no issue or if there was any children they are thought to have died before the enumeration of the 1860 census record. Another possibility could have been that if they had children they were living with other relatives at the time of the 1860 census record.

As previously stated, Riley HALL married for the second time on 31 December 1853 in Pike County, Kentucky. The name of his bride for this marriage was Mary Ann ADAMS.

CONFLICT in name of 2nd wife:
The marriage record that is listed at ancestry.com that it was from the records at the Kentucky Department for Library and Archives lists date of marriage as being on 29 December 1853 and the bride of Riley HALL as Sarah ADAMS.[7]
The marriage record available over at Familysearch for the same marriage was dated on 31 December 1853 and the bride's name was listed as Mary Ann ADAMS.[8]
The 1860 United States Federal Census Record of the household of Riley HALL has her named as "Mary HALL"
The 1870 and 1880 United States Federal Census Record of the Household of Riley HALL lists her as "Polly HALL."

Mary Ann ADAMS was the daughter of William ADAMS and Christina CRACE. Depending on which census age that was used, she could have been born about 1826 [9], about 1828[10] or about 1837 in Kentucky [11], [12]. Her last census record was the 1880 Census Record [13] and Riley Hall was listed with a child by his third wife about December 1882 [14] so it is believed that she died between 1880 and 1882 in Kentucky. She was buried in "Place".

Children of Riley HALL and Mary Ann ADAMS:
  1. Mary Jane HALL (Born: 13 November 1854 in Pike County, Kentucky[15]; Died: 27 November 1924 in Johnson County, Kentucky, [16]; Married: about 1873 to Hardin ADAMS) - Hardin ADAMS (Born: about February 1852 in Kentucky; Son of John ADAMS)
  2. Sarah Ann HALL (Born: About 18 May 1856 in Pike County, Kentucky; Died: Unknown; Married: About 1881 to Elias HOWELL)
  3. Spicey HALL (Born: Between 1860 and August 1863 in Floyd County, Kentucky; Died: 22 June 1931 in Floyd County, Kentucky[17]; Married: 20 March 1878 in Floyd County, Kentucky to Jesse HOWELL) - Jesse HOWELL (Born: Between 1828 adn November 1836 in North Carolina [Note: breakdown of possible dates of birth for Jesse HOWELL: 1.) about 1828, [18] 2.) about 1830 in Kentucky, [19] 3.) about 1831 in North Carolina, [20] 4.) about 1832 in North Carolina, [21] or 5.) About November 1836 in Kentucky. [22]]; believed to have been the son of Larkin HOWELL and an unknown mother; Died: Between 1900 and 1910 Census enumerations)
  4. Lydia Margaret HALL
  5. David HALL
  6. Simpson HALL
  7. William Riley HALL (Born: 26 August 1859 in Letcher County, Kentucky[23])

After the death of Mary Ann (ADAMS) HALL, Riley HALL married Mrs. Mary Jane (OSBORNE) HOWELL, the widow of Squire HOWELL.

The previous marriage of Mary Jane OSBORNE occurred on 17 August 1875 in Pike County, Kentucky to Squire HOWELL. Squire HOWELL was the son of Jesse HOWELL and his first wife, Elizabeth HALL. This Jesse HOWELL was the same person who married Riley HALL and Mary Ann ADAMS' daughter Spicey HALL.
Squire HOWELL was born about 1856 in Kentucky and died between 1880 and December 1882.
Children of Squire HOWELL and Mary Jane OSBORNE:
  1. Aquilla HOWELL (Born: About 1876 in Kentucky[24])
  2. Wilburn HOWELL (Born: About 1879 in Kentucky) [25]; Died: After 1900[26]

Mary Jane OSBORNE was about 31 March 1857 in Pike County, Kentucky [27], [28] and died about 23 May 1939 in Robinson Creek, Pike County, Kentucky. [29] She was the daughter of George OSBORNE and Clarinda BURKE. [30] She was buried in Indian Creek at Wales, KY. [31]

After the death of Riley HALL, Mary Jane (OSBORNE) HOWELL HALL was married for a third time to Daniel VANOVER about 12 November 1910. Due to her advanced age, it is believed that this marriage produced no children.[32]

Daniel VANOVER was born about 1839 in Pike County, Kentucky and died on 8 August 1912 in Pike County, Kentucky. [33] He was the son of John VANOVER. The name of his mother is currently unknown.

Research Progress

Transcriptions for Riley HALL, with Parents, Unknown

Although the names of the parents of Riley HALL are currently unknown, one of the strong possibilities is that his father was Samuel HALL and his mother was Spicey RHEA. More research is needing to be done to confirm this, but I have included Samuel HALL's 1830 and 1840 Census Records to show that he indeed had a child who could have been this particular Riley HALL.

1830 United States Federal Census Record of Pike County, Kentucky, Household of Samuel HALL[34]

Household in 1830:
Household headed by Samuel HALL
2 Free White Males Aged Under 5 Years
1 Free White Male Aged 10 to 15 Years
1 Free White Male Aged 30 to 40 Years
1 Free White Female Aged 5 to 10 Years
1 Free White Female Aged 10 to 15 Years
1 Free White Female Aged 30 to 40 Years
No Slaves or Free Colored Persons enumerated in the household.
Other Information Recorded: 7 Total Individuals, No Health problems reported for the Free White members of the household [Deaf and dumb, or Blind]. No Foreigners not naturalized listed in this household.
RESEARCH NOTES:
In 1830, Riley HALL would have been about 1 Year Old and this household has 2 Free White Males under 5 Years of age. This means that Samuel HALL could have been the father of Riley HALL. More research is needed to confirm the identity of all the different children that were listed within the household and to confirm parentage of Riley HALL.

1840 United States Federal Census Record of Pike County, Kentucky, Household of Samuel HALL[35]

Household in 1840:
1 Free White Male Aged 5 to 10 Years

1 Free White Female Aged 40 to 50 Years
Total: 9 Individuals, 1 Engaged in Agriculture, 1 Listed as a white person over the age of 20 Years who could not read nor write.
RESEARCH NOTES:
In 1840, Riley HALL would have been about 11 Years Old and this household has 2 Free White Males in the age bracket of 10 to 15 Years. This means that Samuel HALL could have been the father of Riley HALL. More research is needed to confirm the identity of all the different children that were listed within the household and to confirm parentage of Riley HALL.

  • Note: Polly is a noted nickname for Mary, Paula and Paulina. Since the marriage bond stated her father's name was Francis TACKETT, I looked for a Francis TACKETT that was in Pike County, Kentucky in 1850 that had a child with one of these names in the household. This may or may not be the right household, but it appears to have been a good match.

He was my 3rd great grandfather. I am writing a research outline on him for my genealogy. I have set up the wiki to show my notes as I find them. This may take a while to update as there is so much to find and document.
