Biography

From https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/M5KF-NVB : William Hall is named as a BROTHER in the will of David Hall (Louisa, Virginia will book 6, page 512). William's children are David's heirs. William Hall's son William Jr is given land from his grandfather John Thornton in John's Will. Sarah Hall and John Thornton are the grandparents of William Jr.

Sarah Thurston Hall was born in Hanover County VA on March 15, 1806. She died Sept 29, 1883 in St Joseph County, Indiana. She was the youngest of three children of Sarah Thornton (1765-1835) and William Hall (1759-1835). Her maternal grandparents were John Thornton Sr (1744-1822) and Sarah Mynn Thurston (1743-1821). Sarah Thurston Hall obviously got her middle name from her maternal grandmother. She was married at the age of twenty three on Dec 17, 1829. At that time she was living with her uncle, John Thornton Jr at Church Quarter. Her husband was Milo Whitney Smith (1800-1862) from Benson, VT who was then the Headmaster at the Hanover Academy but was released from that job because of his inability to maintain discipline with his farm boy students. Following his removal from his job, Milo, his new wife Sarah and Sarah's mother returned to Benson, VT. Their first child, Virginia Smith (1830-1887), was born on Oct 28, 1830. On July 3, 1832 a court case was filed by the executor of John Thornton's estate against Milo Smith and wife in Benson, VT to recover room and board expenses they identified as being owed by Sarah while living with her uncle. The case records, fifty eight pages of hand written records has extensive data on the charges and answers to those charges by Milo Smith in VT and the court in VA.
