Obituary[8]
A long standing Taylor County physician and former Campbellsville mayor is dead at the age of 80. Dr. Michael Medley Hall died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1988, at Metzmeier Nursing Home where he had been a resident for several years. Hall was mayor of Campbellsville for four years, from 1958 until 1961. "I remember his tenure," said Robert L. Miller, presently mayor of Campbellsville. "He served the city well." During Hall's term Campbellsville was able to enlarge the sewage treatment plant, initiate the first local housing program, install parking meters, first add flouride to drinking water, create garbage and rubbish disposal, create the position of building inspector and construct the City Hall building. Zoning was also begun in his administration. He began his general medicine practice in Campbellsville in 1933 and is remembered by some of his cohorts as a respected member of the medical community. "I remember him for his whistling more than anything else," joked Dr. Forest Shely, a fellow physician. "I remember him for the tremendous patient load that he carried," Shely went on to say on a more somber note. "He was much respected and you always knew where you stood with him. He was very straight-forward." "I liked him," commented Dr. Henry Chambers. "He said what was on his mind and was a good and caring physician." Chambers said Hall delivered "a lot of babies" during his early practice. Hall was born in a section of Taylor County between Pleasant Hill and Saloma. He was the son of William Lee and Annie Speer Hall. He received his early education at the former Taylor County High School and completed his pre-med work at Vanderbilt University and the University of Louisville. He graduated from U of L Medical College in 1933 and began his general practice in Campbellsville that same year. His brother, Dr. Lyman S. Hall, joined him in practice in 1936. During World War II, he volunteered to serve in the U. S. Army and spent 39 months principally in the European Theatre of War (1942-45) as a captain in the medical corps. He was a charter member of both the Campbellsville Rotary Club and the Taylor County Board of Health. He was a member and deacon of the Bethel First Presbyterian Church, was a Mason, a member of Sons of the American Revolution and the Taylor County Medical Association. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Shively Hall; one son, and two daughters, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The funeral was Monday at 2 p.m. at the Lyon-DeWitt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ralph Weedon officiating. Burial was in the Brookside Cemetery. Pallbearers were members of the Taylor County Medical Association and the Rotary Club. ~Obituaries of Taylor County, Kentucky, Volume II, compiled by Eunice Montgomery Wright, April 14, 1990, p. 81
