Flavil Joseph was born the third of five children to Robert Tooms Hall and Sarah Doliska (Mills). He married Martha Jay Hall and they had three children: Gardner Sewell Hall Sr., Effie Zellner, and Leslie Wright. Martha died in 1913 and Flavil's stepmother, Eliza Morton, helped with the children until he remarried on June 7, 1919 to Bertha Mary Williams.
Flavil was well known as a minister in several states including Georgia, Alabama, Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana. He wrote articles for religious publications, several books, and poetry. He was a hymn writer and compiled several songbooks. He taught music extensively.
Flavil lived the last years of his life at the homeplace of Bertha in Alabama until his death.
