Biography

Research Notes

Three men named Samuel Hall lived in the town of Taunton, Massachusetts between 1644 and 1669. Two of those Samuels were father and son. One Samuel Hall was born 1656 in Rehoboth, Massachusetts. On February 10, 1696, a deed was filed in Taunton. The opening line of this deed is as follows:

"To all Christian People before whom these presents shall come Samuel Hall Sen (Samuel Hall, Sr.) of Taunton in the County of Bristol in the Colony of Newplimuth the son of Edward Hall of Rehoboth (Edward Hall of Rehoboth Deceased) and Abigail his wife ... "

It was signed by Samuel Hall and Abigail Hall. The Rehoboth Town Records clearly show Samuel Hall, son of Edward, was born in 1656. And now this deed clearly reflects his wife was Abigail Pratt, not Elizabeth Bush.

The Taunton Town Hall burned down in the 19th century and with it went many vital records. Someone did, however, through existing family records and other sources, document that a Samuel Hall born in 1644 was married to Elizabeth White. This person neglected to write down what year the other two Samuels were born. So I checked the Taunton land records. Samuel Hall (Sr.), born 1644 had died on October 30, 1669. Therefore, after the 1669 date, you still have two other Samuels living in Taunton.

Today, if you see Jr. on the end of a name it means that you are the son of your father. However, back in the 17th century, it meant the oldest of that name in the town was Sr. and the younger was Jr. and not necessarily father and son. (reference: The Halls of New England, Rev. David Brainard Hall, A.M., 1883, Joel Munsell & Sons, Duanesburgh, New York)

Samuel Hall, (Jr.) born 1656, now becomes Samuel, (Sr.) because he is older than Samuel Hall born 1664, who now becomes Samuel Hall, (Jr.). Because the way the Sr. and Jr. were used in colonial times and the dates of the marriages, the correct format would look like this: (1) Samuel Hall (Sr.) born 1644 m. Elizabeth White. (2) Samuel Hall, (Jr.) born 1656 m. Abigail Pratt. (3) Samuel Hall born 1664 m. Elizabeth Bourn(e)

We know that Samuel Hall born 1664 had a son Samuel. Who was his wife? When the individual documented the marriages, he only put down Samuel Hall and Elizabeth Bourn married .... and Samuel Hall, Jr and Abigail Prass married... Guess what! In this case, it was not father and son. So to make a long story short, Samuel Hall and Elizabeth Bourn go back to Samuel Hall and Elizabeth White, not to Edward Hall.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:

John, I have a copy of the Kempton (Part IV) book that you mention. The deed mentioned in that book on pp. 330-331 is Bristol Deed 2:97 and is not the deed that identifies which Samuel Hall married Abigail Pratt (mentioned in this Profile's research notes). That deed is Bristol 2:35. The image of that deed can be found at:

Thanks Jillaine, I found another book that verifies it. "The Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton 1878-1908, Part IV". Smith, Dean Crawford. Boston. New England Historic Genealogical Society. 2000. Pg 330-334. It talks about the deed and list Samuel, all his brothers and sisters, who they married and all their children. It does say Samuel married Elizabeth Bourn.

John, as posted on the profile of this Samuel's father, a 1696 deed identifies Edward Hall as the father of the Samuel Hall who married Abigail. The 1902 genealogy author probably hadn't seen that deed.

Samuel Hall and Elizabeth (White) Hall first son Samuel (b 1664) married Abigail Pratt not Elizabeth Bourn(e). See the book The Nicholas White family : 1643-1900 which has 5 generations of descendants.

I have posted a diagram of how all of the Hall, Hall, Pratt, Pratt, and White families are connected. If anyone sees a mistake in this diagram, I would very much appreciate being informed so that I am change it.
