Mistaken Identity

The Samuel Hull of this profile is not the Samuel Hull who married Grace Lytton and died in Columbiana County, Ohio in 1831.[1][2][3]

Charles Weygant in The Hull Family in America incorrectly states that the Samuel Hull who was the son of Joseph Hull and Eliza Clark married Grace Lytton.[4] An examination of more trusted sources has found that the Samuel who was the son of Joseph Hull and Eliza Clark instead married Charlotte Leonora Phelps.[1][5][6][7]

Weygant states that the Samuel who married Grace Lytton settled permanently in Ohio.[4] Whereas the Samuel of this profile (husband of Charlotte Leonora Phelps) started out in Derby, Connecticut, then spent a large part of his adult life in Eden, Maine before returning to Connecticut in 1817.[1] There is no indication that he ever lived in Ohio.[1]

Unfortunately, Samuel's mistaken identity in The Hull Family in America has propagated into many online, privately maintained family trees and this misinformation continues to be copied as factual.

Biography

Samuel Hull was born on 5 August 1755 in Derby, New Haven County, Connecticut. He was the son of Joseph Hull and Eliza Clark.[1][8][9][10][11]

Samuel Hull married Charlotte Leonora Phelps on 7 November 1779 in Oxford Congregational Church, Oxford, Derby, Connecticut.[1][5][6][7][12]

Samuel and his wife had moved to Eden, Maine by the time their first child, Elizabeth "Betsy" Hull was born in 1781.[13][14] According to Eden town birth records, all of their children were born in Eden, Maine. A less trusted source, The Phelps Family Of America...[7] shows the children as born in Derby, Connecticut, the former residence of Samuel Hull. The children were[1]:

  1. Elizabeth "Betsey" Hull, b. 1 Apr 1781[13], m. James L Walter
  2. Mary "Polly" Hull, b. 6 Apr 1783,[15] m. Israel Higgins
  3. Nancy Hull, b. 7 Sep 1785,[16] m. Royal Gurley
  4. Stephen M Hull, b. 2 Jul 1787,[17] d. 10 Sep 1801 at age 14
  5. Emily Hull, b. 2 Sep 1788,[18] m. James Bassett
  6. Sophia Hull, b. 26 Jun 1790,[19], d. 1 Aug 1873, 1st m. John Moulton, 2nd m. Nathaniel Bacon
  7. Henry William Hull, b. 26 Sep 1793,[20] d. 26 Oct 1793 as an infant
  8. William H Hull, b 7 Mar 1798 (twin),[21] never married
  9. Harriet Leonora Hull, b. 7 Mar 1798 (twin)[22], d. 1872, m. Sheldon Bassett

The first town meeting of the newly founded Town of Eden was held on 4 April 1796 at the home of Samuel Hull.[23][14] His home was in the village of Hull's Cove which was named after him.[23][14] He served on the town's board of selectman.[23]

Samuel moved back to Connecticut in 1817.[1][23]

He was closely related to at least two notable people. General William Hull was Samuel's brother.[14] Commodore Isaac Hull was his nephew (son of Samuel's brother Joseph).

Research Notes

The Town of Eden, Maine was renamed Bar Harbor in 1918, a hundred years after Samuel had moved back to Connecticut.
