Biography

Catherine "Kitty" Hall[1][2] was born 15 Jun 1821[3] in Stokes County, North Carolina.[4][5][6] She was the daughter of William Hall and his wife, Rhoda Redford, who lived on the waters of Hixes Fork of Peters Creek, in Stokes County, North Carolina. They purchased land along the Virginia border in 1823.[7]

On 1 Aug 1831, her father moved the family by ox team and flatboat to then Cole County, Missouri landing at Sandy Hook 1 Sep 1831, being one month on the road. Several other family members and friends also migrated to Missouri.[8]

Kitty was married by license issued in Cole County, Missouri (license on file, not recorded) on 10 Oct 1839 to John G. Harris (before Moniteau County was formed).[9] They were the parents of five children:

  1. Susan Harris (8 Feb 1846-30 Apr 1875), married 14 Feb 1867 to John Wesley Cornett
  2. William C Harris (31 Jan 1849-17 Jan1919), married after 1880 to Edith Emmadine Pennington
  3. James H (or M) Harris (21 Apr 1851-10 Jan 1947), married Lucinda E McClanahan
  4. Sarah "Sallie" J Harris (about 1854-16 Dec 1921), married 10 Nov 1870 to George P Barker
  5. Lurena Nancy Harris (1860-?), never married, before 1930 moved to Los Angeles, California where she lived with her niece, Ora Ella Cornett

Catherine Harris (age 28 North Carolina) was enumerated with John Harris (age 30 born North Carolina) on the 1850 Census in District No 58, Moniteau County, Missouri, United States of America. Also in the household were Susan (age 4 Missouri) and William (age 1 Missouri). John was a farmer who owned real estate valued at $1300.[5]

Kitty Harris (age 41 Missouri) was enumerated with John G Harris (age 42 born Missouri) on the 1860 Census in Township 46, Range 14, Moniteau County, Missouri, United States of America. Also in the household were Susan E (age 15 Missouri), W. C. (age 12 Missouri), Jas H (age 10 Missouri), Sarah J (age 6 Missouri), and Nancy L (age 10/12 Missouri). John was still a farmer whose personal property had a value of $250. No values were written in the real estate column for the entire page.[10]

John G Harris died in Jun 1865 after the surrender (of the Southern Forces) on board of a steamboat on his way home. He was wounded in the last days of fighting in the Civil War and died on board a ship at Vicksburg, Mississippi.[4]

Kitty (age 52 North Carolina) was listed as a widow living in Linn township, Moniteau County, Missouri, on the 1880 Census. Living with her was son William C (age 30 Missouri), daughter Lurene N (age 20 Missouri), son-in-law John W. Cornett (age 36 widowed Missouri), and John's daughter Ora E (age 8 Missouri).[6]

When the Union Veterans and Widows Census was taken. Ketty Harris, widow of John G Harris, was included. Although the entry is crossed through with the notation "confed," the enumeration record was completed and shows that John was a Private with Company H, 10th Mo Cavalry, from Sept 1864 to May 1865.[11]

Kitty died on 13 Mar 1897 near Jamestown, in Linn County, Moniteau County, Missouri, and was buried at Union Cemetery near Jamestown.[3][4] [12]

Research Notes

  • A search of every FamilySearch image of the 1870 Census for Linn township, Moniteau County, did not find Kitty Harris or her family members. A search of the 1870 Census transcription at the USGenWeb site for all of Moniteau County did not find any Harris or Cornell family members.[13]

US War Dept records indicate he was paroled in June 1866 which conflicts with the Moniteau County Probate Court records regarding the timing of his death. An entry in the Probate Court of Moniteau County, Missouri, on 29 July 1865 makes it clear that his wife and children thought he was dead.[14] The estate was probated from that date through the final entry in Sept 1877 when "Nancy L Harris appears in open court and having arrived to the full age of Eighteen years and acknowledges full satisfaction of her guardian Kitty Harris."[15]
