Mickey Hallum reports "Two Hallum brothers came to America in the mid-1700's. They were William and Henery Hallum (original spelling Hallam) from Hallamshire, England. They were the younger brothers of John Hallum. In those days the oldest brother inherited all the father's estate; thus I think that is the reason the two younger ones came to America. William lived in South Carolina and Georgia. Henry went to North Carolina and on to Tennessee. his descendants went on into Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas."
William was named in a land survey in Maryland in 1748.[3] Note that he would have been quite young; this appears to be out of place, perhaps this references a different man.
Notes as found on his profile at findagrave.com:
While numerous genealogies on Ancestry name Sallie Reeder as wife of William Hallum, none of those genealogies have a single document for Sallie. We don't know where this originated...could have been a family bible, or other family documents not given to everyone.
Suggested edit: I am descended from William Hallum through two of his children - Elizabeth Hallum Smith and Dorcas Hallum Pickens. William's wife was not Sallie Reeder. His wife was Martha Prather (b. 17 Jan 1733 in Prince George's County, MD to Philomen (Phillip) Gittens Prather and Catherine Hunt. Martha married William Hallum in Prince George's County, MD in 1747 and she died in South Carolina prior to 1776. In Sept 1756, William Hallum sold his 2 properties in Fredericks County, MD - Hallum's Lookout (215 acres) and Great Hall (100 acres). Both transactions were witnessed by Thomas Prather and the dower release was signed by "Martha Hallum".
Further documentation that demonstrates the close relationship between the Hallums and Praters is found in "Miscellaneous Records M. M. 1763-1767" part 2 pages 747-748 in the Dept. of Archives, Columbia, SC in which Phillip Prather (age 15) made application for William Hallum to become the guardian for him and his 5 siblings. Their father, Thomas Prather, of Enoree. SC had died and William Hallum was the brother of their mother, Dorcas Hallum.
Please make this correction. I will be happy to add documentation for additional family members. Contributor: Susannah Dillon Find A Grave: Memorial #138327359
