There were many Thomas Halseys born in England around the same time as our Thomas. The problem is figuring out which Thomas Halsey is the one who became the ancestral father of most if not all the Halseys in America. The older histories on the Halsey family had Thomas being born in the Golden Parsonage, Great Gaddesden, Hertfordshire, England. However, the most current research conducted by the Halsey Family Association of Southampton, Long Island points to the Thomas Halsey of the Golden Parsonage as having been a cousin to our Thomas Halsey. The discussion and conclusions follow.
There are two ancestral lines presented by three authors with two of the three agreeing on this one: Thomas Halsey Alias Chambers, Robert & Ellen Alley, Thomas, John. Raymond Wheeler presents the will of his thought to be father, Robert, husband of Ellen Alley, which names Ellen, as his wife, Thomas, as his son and Ann as his daughter. He continues to support this with the marriages of both Thomas and Ann into the Wheeler family. He also presents other wills, parish records e. g. Thomas's place and date of baptism and other like documents which disputes the second line. His work may be found here.[1] More discussion of his ancestral line in England may be found here as well and agrees with Wheeler's line and states that the image of the second line is NOT this Thomas Halsey's line because the Thomas in the second line was the one who went to Naples for his health and NOT the Thomas of this profile of Southampton (Page 1222). His rationale/discussion may be found here.[2] Wheeler's and Severmith's line has been accepted by the Halsey Family Association of Southampton, New York as the ancestral for this Thomas Halsey.[3]The image on this profile is disputed by both Wheeler and Severmith cited above and is as follows: Thomas, Robert & Dorothy Downes Halsey, William & Elizabeth Lodge Halsey als Chamber, William & Alice Halsey als Chamber, John of Parsonage of Great Gaddesden in England.[4]
Thomas Halsey alias Chambers, thought to be son of Robert and Ellen Alley Halsey (Wheeler/Seversmith's line), was baptized at Flamstead Hertsfield, England was born March 1593/4 and died August 27 1678 in Southampton, New York.[5]
The Ships Arrears List of 1637 of Kempston, England support the fact that he had gone to New England in the same year[6]that his name is listed on the articles of agreement and living in Lynn, Massachusetts.
In England he married (1) Elizabeth Wheeler, daughter of John and Elizabeth Wheeler, born circa 1625 in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England,[7] who was killed in 1649 by the Pequot Indians[8] and (2) Ann Johnes July 25 1660, widow of Edward Johnes in Southampton, New York.[9][10]
