On a recent trip to the Morris County Library in New Jersey, I found an exerpt of a letter written by Mark Walton Jr. to his son James Burdge Walton. The original letter is at the Historic New Orleans Collection. In the letter he states that his mother's last name was "Coe".
In 1775 my father Mark Walton Sr. lived in Rockaway, Morris, New Jersey and was considered a man of ample means as he owned a forge for making iron, a saw mill, and a small farm, all in successful operation. He married Ann Coe, a sister of Mr. Dickerson of Morristown, and continued his business for some years successfully. He had five children--Joseph, John, Mark and Ann twins (born 1 Aug 1786) and Elizabeth. My mother died in 1790 (her gravestone says Jan. 9, 1791). A few months after, my father married again to widow Ruth Youngs of Morristown, and continued his business for a few years, until he lost all by the destruction of his forge and saw mill, all of which was carried away by a freshet of high water and nothing left on the ground to mark the spot where the works still stood. From that time, he never recovered or succeeded in any thing he undertook and had a hard time of it to make a living for his family and was unable to educate his children properly... From "Gleanings in England": Possibly the daughter of William Delaplain of Newark.
