Eupham became involved in an affair with Samuel Rutherford, the young Regent of Humanities at the University of Edinburgh.
In February 1626, a report reached Edinburgh town council that Samuel had "fallen in fornication with Eupham Hamilton, and has committed a great scandal in the college"[1] A daughter Marie was born a couple of months later in April 1626.[2]
Although Samuel was immediately relieved of his duties at the college, he married Eupham and then went on to become a Calvinist minister, spending the rest of his life making reparations for the wrong he had committed. Samuel and Eupham had at least two children who did not survive, and Eupham died in about 1830.
