James was the son of William Hamilton and Ellen Magennis.

He lived at Tollymore, County Down, Ireland

James Hamilton, of Tollymore, co. Down, married the Hon. Anne Mordaunt, grand-daughter of John Mordaunt, 1st Earl of Peterborough, "and sister to Mrs. Hamilton, of Bangor", co. Down.

Children

1. James, 1st Earl of Clanbrassil (of the second creation) created in 1756; married Lady Harriet Bentinck, daughter of William, Earl of Portland.
2. William, died young
3. John, died young.
4. Elisabeth married Thomas Fortescue, Esq., father of William Henry Fortescue, 1st Earl of Clermont.
5. Sophia married Frederick Hamilton, eldest son of Gustavus Hamilton, Viscount Boyne.
6. Cary, a daughter

He died in 1700. Will dated 28 December 1693, proved on 6 August 1700. ^[1]

Research Notes

It is possible that Sophia and possibly Cary are not the daughters of Anne Mordaunt. They may be the daughters of an unknown second wife. They are mentioned together in his 1693 will.
