Biography

Notes on JAMES HAMILTON: In the 1850 White, Indiana Co., PA Census, James is listed as 63, Margaret is 55, Mary is 14. Living with them is daughter Eliza Templeton, 34, and Robert F. Templeton, 7. The land is worth $1500 and they are living next door to William and his family. In the White, Indiana County, PA 1860 Census, James Hamilton is listed as 73 years of age, his wife Margaret, 65. The children living with them are Thomas M. Camaham, 24; Mary E. Camaham, 24; Jas. O. H. Camaham, 4; and Martha J. Camaham. This was their youngest daughter and her family living with them. A Death Index for 1870 shows a James Hamilton of Indiana Co., PA, farmer, died of old age. He was 82 years old and his birth month was October. A MARY AGEY is listed a few rows down from James, died in March of inflammation of the lungs and was 54. The will of James Hamilton: Indiana County, Penna, Will Book #3, page 459, No. 2553. “In the name of God Amen. I James Hamilton of the Township of White in the County of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania being weak in body but of sound mind, memory and understanding considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof and to the end that I may be the better prepared to leave this would whenever it shall please god to call me hence, do therefore make and declare this my last will and testament in the manner following, that is to say, First and foremostly I commend my soul into the hands of Almighty and my Creator and as to the worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to entrust me. I dispose of in the following manner. It is my will and I direct that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid out of any personal estate as soon as may be after my decease. 2nd I bequeath and devise unto my beloved wife MARGARET all the balance of personal estate of every description. And all the one undivided half part of my real estate to her and her heirs and assigns forever, with the use of the house in which. I now reside during her natural lifetime. 3rd I give and devise unto my son-in-law THOMAS CARNAHAM the remaining undivided half part of my Real Estate to him and his heirs and assigns forever. Upon condition however that the said Thomas Carnahan pay the sum of thirteen hundred and thirty dollars in the manner at at the times hereinafter. Specified to wit. To my daughter, NANCY KIMBLE the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars to be paid within four years after my decease. To my son WILLIAM W. HAMILTON the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars to be paid within five years after my decease. To my daughter JANE LYDICK the sume of one hundred and fifty dollars to be paid within seven years after my decease. To my daughter MATILDA TRIMBLE, the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars to be paid within eight years after my decease. To my daughter ELIZA MOATIN?TEMPLETON the sum of One hundred and fifty dollars to be paid within nine years after my decease. To my daughter MARY ELLEN CAMAHAN the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars to be paid within ten years after my decease. To pay annually for the term of ten years to the Free Presbyterian Church of Indiana and Diamondville the sum of thirty dollars commencing at my decease. To the American Missionary Association the sum of fifty dollars to be paid five years after my decease. To the American Bible Society sum of fifty dollars to be paid within eleven years after my decease. To my executors the sum of thirty dollars is for the purpose of defraying the expense of settling my estate to be paid within one year after my decease. I further divide that I carry of the instilling to which I have ordered money to be paid shall cease to act as a separate organization then it is to say will that the money and my dear son William C Hamilton executors of this my last will and testament hereby working and making void all former wills by me at anything made..In witness whereof I the said testor have to this my last will set my hand and seal the fourteenth day of June AD 1862.” James Hamilton (Seal) (Source: Vo. 6.
