She has been attributed as a daughter of each of the three main partners of her father, James Hamilton. Most likely, she is a daughter of Janet.

Douglas Richardson credits the Earl with 4 daughters called Jean or Janet, all illegitimate. ^[1]

James Balfour Paul states that Alexander Cunningham, Master of Glencairn, married in November 1526 to the Jean (or Janet) who was a natural daughter of James Hamilton, 2nd Lord Hamilton and 1st earl of Arran. ^[2] Therefore, Janet Beaton, second wife of the 1st earl of Arran, is being detached as the mother of the subject of this profile.

In his Will, her father, James Hamilton, made separate bequests to "his daughter, wife of the son of the master of Glencairn".
