Sir William Hamilton of Macknairstown, afterwards of Sorn and Sanquhar was born in Cambuskeith, Ayrshire, Scotland, Son of Alexander Hamilton 4th of Cambuskeith and Marion de Cunynghame. [1][2][3]

He married Katherine Kennedy, daughter of David Kennedy, 1st Earl of Cassillis and Agnes (Borthwick) Kennedy, in or before 1518. [2][4] They had issue, including:

  1. William, his heir.[2][5]
  2. Isabel, m. Robert Sempill, 3rd Lord Sempill
  3. Bernard[2]

He held the office of Lord Provost of Edinburgh in 1555 and unconfirmed assertion lists him as Lord High Treasurer of Scotland. He lived at Sanquhar, Scotland and died 1569 in Sanquhar Castle, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

  • George Hamilton opines that William's father had a first wife named Kathrine Farquhar relict of Schaw of Glenmuir and that Katherine was the mother of WIlliam..[6]
